This guide is NOT used to make any sort of profit As long as those guide lines are followed, then doe-see-doe... As of now, some of my FAQs and Guides may also be found at the following places: www.Gamefaqs.com www.supercheats.com www.neoseeker.com Please note, that even though I am not a lazy person, I am a busy one. So Gamefaqs will be the only place I submit updates. If you want to make sure you're viewing the most up to date version of my work, then please check there. Nothing against the other sites, as I fully enjoy them as well, its just easier for me this way. Also, please don't ask for the ROM. If it does exist, then use google to find it for your self. If, on the other hand, you want to purchase the actual board, then feel free to ask me where to obtain that. Finally, I would like to point out that I know next no Japanese. So I have no idea what the story is to this game. However, I am learning, so when possible, I tried to translate the names of the special moves. But when I couldn't, I made something up. Bet you can't tell which are real and which are bull flop ^_~ _______________________________________________________________________________ 2. G A M E F U N D A M E N T A L S _______________________________________________________________________________ |#| RULES OF ENGAGEMENT |#| Each character has 2 health bars and 1 special bar. I should point out that, even though 2 health bars may seem like a lot, certain special and super attacks can drain a whole bar or more. In the case of the final boss, you may actually wish you had 3 health bars =b The battles are fought in the best of 3 90 second rounds. If there is no winner within 3 rounds, then there is a final 40 second round. No winner in the final round results in both players losing. |#| CONTROLS |#| *NOTE: all commands are listed if you are facing to the right. If facing to the left, reverse the direction /======================< C O N T R O L S >=======================\ | | | (jump) | | A - Light attack | | UB U UF | | O O O B - Hard attack | | \ | / | | (mid/ guard) B O- -O F C - Powerful attack | | high / | \ | | O O O | | DB D DF | | (low guard) | | (crouch) | | | |--------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | | | Holds/Throws : O- or -O + B/C button | | | | Air Defense : O- in the air while being attacked | | | | Retreat : O- O- | | | | Advance : -O -O | | | | Get Weapon : | + attack (while standing over your weapon) | | O | | | | Roll : \ or / (after being knocked down) | | O O | | O O | | Jump up : / or \ (after being knocked down) | | | | Push Back : (during block animation) -o + 2 buttons | | | | Boost Mode : | | + ABC (when super bar is maxed and you're armed)| | o o | | | | Bash Attack : Press A and B at the same time | \==================================================================/ |#| SPECIAL BAR |#| Every character has a Special Bar at the bottom of the screen. Each characters special bar is of a different length. The special bar can be filled in the following ways: 1: Give damage to opponent 2: Receive damage from opponent 3: Push back an attack 4: Using special attacks The special bar also fills up, slowly, on its own. When the bar is at least 1/3rd or 1/2 filled (Depending on the character) EX attacks may be used. When the bar is at MAX, the character may perform a SUPER move or go into BOOST mode. |#| EX ATTACKS |#| EX attacks are performed by pressing A and B together, instead of just one button, when performing a special attack. EX attacks require 1/3rd or 1/2 of a special bar, depending on the character in use. (generally, the shorter the bar, the more it uses) These attacks are usually suped up, multi hit versions of the attack. Although some EX attacks take up new animations or add in special effects. I'd also like to add that, In my opinion, a lot of characters EX attacks are better than their Super moves. (Alice being a case in point) **PlusMinus Adds: An easy way to do an EX attack in a combo is by holding down A (say, from the last attack) and doing the joystick motion and then pressing B. Holding B and pressing A works too. |#| BOOST MODE |#| When your characters' special bar is maxed, you have the option of using a super move or going into boost mode. What Boost mode does is, when activated, bestows special traits or characteristics upon your character for the rest of the round. There are some trade offs though. When your character enters Boost mode, you are no longer able to use EX attacks, Super attacks or your ABC attack. Also, most boost modes seem to only aid in a very small or unobvious way. So boost mode, for a lot of characters, isn't very beneficial. For those of you who are combo heavy attackers, you may think that it isn't that bad of a trade off, since you can just choose someone whose Boost adds multi hits or extra power... Well, at least until you learn more about the combo system... *NOTE: You NEED your weapon to enter boost mode. So if you've thrown it, you have to go and get it before you can enter boost mode. In Lightnings case, you need to have both of his swords.* |#| COMBO SYSTEM |#| The combo system in this game is similar to that of SNKs Real Bout Fatal Fury. It is similar in that you can link weaker attacks into stronger ones. For example, a simple combo in RBFF is A->B->C. That same combo (and variations there of) can be used in this game. It is also possible to cancel normal attacks into other normal attacks or special or even super attacks. For example, Rosemary has the combo A->down+B->Dark Helios, where the down+B attack is a mutli hit that would normally push the opponent to far away for the Dark Helios to connect. However, if you input the command during the first or second hit of the down+B attack, you will cancel right into it. (doing a rather flashy combo, might I add) Another thing that is definitely worth mentioning about the combo system is that each succeeding hit results in an exponential decrease in attack power. This isn't really noticeable during small combos, but it becomes more obvious during long combos and super moves. So all of you that like to exploit infinite combos will actually have to learn to PLAY this game because after enough hits, a combo will actually do NO damage! For this reason, I won't list any infinites. (I only found 2 anyways. if your curious, they were for Alice and Footee) |#| PUSH BACK |#| The Push Back is almost identical to Capcoms Advance Guard. the only difference being how its performed. While blocking an opponents attack(s), press -O + 2 buttons and you will take less to no block damage, plus you will push the opponent across the screen. This allows you to set up opponents for a counter attack, or just save your own ass against those damn supers! You are able to push back any attack as well as being able to push back while in the air. Also, don't try to push back multi hitting beam attacks (or S. Geists chain sword attacks) until the final hit. Other wise, you may end up taking a heap of damage. *NOTE: I've just been informed, that you only need to press "toward", to do a push back. Maybe I just have bad timing, but that doesn't always work for me so I'm going to list both, and let you decide which to use.* |#| GUARD CANCEL |#| PlusMinus says: "You can cancel from the blocking animation with any special or EX move, or any super, or even the boost mode command. This is often more useful than just doing a pushback. What's more is that you can even GC from an air block so long as you have an air special move, making air blocking even more overpowered in this game... It seems you can cancel at any time during the block, even when it's not a good idea (i.e. in the middle of Curfue's EX Laser Shot, resulting in you getting hit or even just continuing to block but wasting power gauge). For clarification, I meant you'd waste power gauge if you tried to Guard Cancel with an EX or Super move. GC-ing doesn't use up any extra power gauge." |#| BASH ATTACK |#| The bash attack can be performed by pressing the A and B buttons together. Essentially, this is a light damage hit that knocks the enemy across the screen or up into the air. This attack is great for ending combos. It is also useful for starting certain combos, especially air combos. This attack is also nice for getting some breathing room when your opponent is too close. A definate must learn manuever! Just be sure not to over use this, as a miss leaves you wide open. |#| REGAIN LIFE |#| I have received confirmation that it is indeed possible to regain lost life, although it is probably not worth it. Fernando has recently found out that you are able to regain some lost life by merely standing still. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done, as it is hard to stand still as you try to avoid an onslaught of attacks. Also, it should definately be noted, that the rate at which you regain life is approximately 1% every 1.5 seconds. |#| Juggling |#| Quick note about Juggling... Unless under special circumstances, a character can only be juggled for a maximum of three hits. Any succeeding hit will simply pass through the opponent. |#| De\Reflect thrown weapons |#| UnnamedFer is the one that originally found this out. If a character throws their weapon at you, you can reflect, or at least deflect, it by hitting it with a strong attack. Using a Bash attack generally works if timed correctly. Doing so allows you to hit the opponent with their own weapon, thus causing a nice amount of damage, or, even better, possibly deflect their weapon so that it leaves the screen! Meaning they'll be weaponless for the rest of the match! Against a computer opponent, it is a rarity that they'll throw their weapon unless there will be a guarenteed hit (e.g. in a combo, in close range etc..) So this is mainly a technique to use against human players. |#| UNARMED COMBAT |#| Everyone in this game, except for Footee, is equipped with a weapon. (Ok, even though Taros doesn't have a weapon, he can still morph his body into various things, so I don't consider him unarmed) And out of those with a weapon, three of them can become unarmed. Yashaou, Goat and Zam-B are able to freely toss their weapons, and continue the battle bare handed. While they are with out their weapons those three characters, obviously, go through changes that varies their playing Style. Depending on your playing style, these altered states can make a character stronger or weaker for you to play as. To some people, the difference between armed and unarmed, can even make one character seem like a completely differnt character. An example would be a friend of mine. As Goat he could be a dominating player, using his reach to keep people at the distance he wanted, then using Goats power to just annihilate them. However, if Goat was to lose his weapon, he also loses his reach and some of his power, and becomes less of a poker and more of a combo fighter. This really changes the way Goat can be played, as he now has to get in close to mix it up. And this change caused my friend to be easily defeated. On the plus side, I have yet to find a way to disarm these people. They can only be disarmed if they _choose_ to throw their weapon. So basically, I recommend that you play as these characters armed and unarmed, to get accustomed to their varied playing styles. See if one way or the other suits you better. For those of you interested, I have listed the differences that I have noted for that character in the Character synopsis section of this guide. |#| Damage Levels Tier|#| ** PlusMinus points out: Different characters take different amounts of damage: - Curfue, S. Geist (take the least damage) - Taros - Yashaoh, Goat, Footie, Alice, Rosemary - Zam-B, Lightning (take the most damage) The difference isn't all that much, but you can definately notice it when you do a powerful EX attack against the bosses. Being armed/unarmed makes no difference to the damage you take. Also it's interesting to note that I don't think there's any form of counter damage at all, which is a bit unusual. _______________________________________________________________________________ 3. P L U S M I N U S ' T I P S _______________________________________________________________________________ This is a small list of character specific tips that PlusMinus posted on the boards MANY months ago. Thankfully, I had sense enough to save it. Lightning -After hitting with standing B, hit B again to extend the slash for another two hits. Can only be done with two swords. A bit useless since the damage isn't much and you can't cancel from it, but it's there... -f,f+AB doesn't work in boost mode. Goat -Can combo the first or second hit in the chaos sword x3 slashes into the EX version, provided it's from qcb+B/C. So qcb+A, qcb+B, qcb+AB is a five-hit combo. Can also cancel the first hit from qcb+AB into another qcb+AB for an extra hit, though not much extra damage considering it uses up the whole power gauge. -His qcf*2+attack super does tons more damage if done from across the screen so it gets less hits. Almost makes it worthwhile to use. -Unarmed he's got a very good pseudo-combo of standing B, juggle with standing A -> qcb*2+A (do B, qcb+A, qcb+A). While not a real combo, it's very hard to escape from because the super is unblockable and the timing needed to hit Goat out of it is really tight. Becareful of the opponent rolling away. -Goat unarmed can combo his qcb*2+attack super from his standing B Footee -qcf+A/B/C has bash effect. Curfue -qcf*2+attack super can be avoided just by standing in the right place, about 1/4 from either edge of the screen. (Probably not with Taros though.) -His jumping straight up C attack has bash effect, and is different than his jumping f/b C. -You can do any version of the pomegranate in air, but only using d,d+attack. It comes out as if it were done on the ground, bouncing in midair of the assumed floor. -Explosion on the EX pomegranate can be delayed indefinitely by holding A or B. The distance and arc is the same as the B version pomegranate, and if you do it in the air the grenade will just hover in mid-air if you don't explode it. During this time you have full control over Curfue minus attacks with the button you're holding, and without the AB bash attack or ABC cigar flick. You can switch which button you're holding by holding the other and releasing the first (i.e., while holding the grenade with A, press and hold B, and release A). Doing a special move with the button you're not holding causes you to do the EX version if you have enough power gauge for it, otherwise it just does the regular move. Special moves with C never result in EX moves. There doesn't seem to be a limit on how many grenades you can have littered around the screen at one time, and they'll all blow up at the same time when you release the button. If the round ends, unexploded grenades just disappear. For whatever reason, the computer never seems to actually use this ability... when you've got an EX pomegranate held on screen (or two, or three...) it makes it tricky for your opponent to move back, since they block instead. You can dash back no problem, but your only opponent as Curfue is likely to be the CPU, and they don't really get this. Various People - Characters that hop backwards with b,b (Yashaoh, Goat, Lightning, Alice, and Footie) can attack while hopping backwards by pressing any attack button or AB when you hit back the second time. It requires frame-perfect timing, though. Unfortunately it doesn't work hopping forwards at all, which would be much more useful. _______________________________________________________________________________ 6. C H A R S Y N O P S I S _______________________________________________________________________________ YASHAOU Yashaou is the character for the beginning player. With no real strengths, he also has no real weaknesses. He has the strength and speed to go toe-to-toe when need be and some special attacks to keep opponents away from you when the battle gets too hot (heh, bad joke, I know). His Hells Gate is not only great for anti air, but it is also very combo friendly. His Death attack, on the other hand, while it is very combo UNfriendly, it is great for knocking and keeping opponents away from you. Also, with his endless supply of daggers and his Gathering of the Damned Super move, he's just as powerful, if not more powerful, when he's unarmed. He's good for novices but deadly when used by experts. As an added note, when Yashaou is unarmed, he takes upon a slightly different playing style. I actually prefer to play as him unarmed. So if your able to, I suggest playing as him in both ways, to see what you prefer. or, better yet, get accustomed to both ways, so that you are never at a disadvantage. Armed Unarmed +-------------------------------+------------------------------------- | I can't really put my finger on the differences ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PlusMinus has this to add about Yashaou: "The main difference seems to be in his specials and supers -- with his weapon he's got better anti-air attacks, without it he doesn't have much for anti-air but gets much better long-range attacks. Damage and speed in either mode is comparable. His normal attacks are functionally pretty much the same, sometimes doing less damage and sometimes more (standing C can hit twice unarmed, for instance). His most useful super is when he's unarmed, IMO." GOAT Goat is similar to Yashaou. However he sacrifices some things for added power. Mainly he's slower and not as combo friendly. However, he doesn't really need them. With his Chaos sword and Morning star attacks, he's good for keeping pressure on the enemy, as they have a long reach. His Chaos sword is also good for low anti-air attacks that are to far out of reach for his Rally arrow. Unarmed, he looses a lot of his reach but gains some other helpful attacks. He gains a launcher in the form of his standing B attack. He also gains the most powerful non-boss attack. His Afterquake, if it hits, can take off almost 1 1/2 life bars! Unfortunately your opponent must be right next to you for it to connect, and it has a dreadful charge up time. | ARMED | UNARMED +-------------------------------+-------------------------------------- | Lot of special moves to | Looses all of his special moves | choose from | execpt his Morning star | | | long reach | outside of morning star, has a very | | short reach | | | Single attacks have a lot | Single attack strength is reduced | of power | | | | Slow attack speed | Faster attack speed | | | not combo friendly | not a combo master. but a lot more | | combo friendly | | +-------------------------------+------------------------------------- PlusMinus has this to add about Goat: "Overall, Goat's a better player with his weapon. But he's not that bad without it, and since the ABC weapon throw is actually a decent move for him, it's worthwhile to know how to play without it. With his sword, Goat is a very powerful mid-range character. He doesn't have many long range attacks (qcf+AB and ABC are about it), and at close range he can hold his own but your opponent has more of a chance to hit you instead. But at mid-range, he dominates with fast ranged B attacks and really damaging C attacks. dp+A/B/C is a great anti air, and qcb+C is good for punishing even small mistakes. Without the sword, he improves in speedier attacks and combo ability, but it doesn't quite make up for what he loses in damage, range, and special moves (the exception to all 3 being qcf+AB, which can still do massive damage). You've got to get in close to do any real damage, but at close range he's only marginally better without the sword than with it. His super is quite powerful, but finding good times to use it are hard - the pseudocombo I listed above works sometimes. Notable moves when unarmed are standing B, which lifts the opponent up allowing for easy combos (or just a jumping AB which should give you plenty of time to get your weapon back :p ) and is a decent anti-air; and standing C which is now cancellable and has OK range & damage. He also now has an OK jump-in for combos, namely jumping B, which he's missing with his sword. It's still not great but it's much better for starting combos than jumping A. Characters who you can deal with well unarmed are Taros, who's got good midrange priority but is quite slow and doesn't fight as well up close, and Alice, who doesn't fight well up close at all. Characters you want to keep your weapon while fighting are Yashaou, who's still faster than unarmed Goat but will do more damage too, and Footee, who's also faster. And of course the bosses, against whom you want to do as much damage as possible." FOOTEE She lacks strength, but has the speed and the moves to stay on top of her opponent while avoiding attacks thrown at her. Her BOOST mode only adds to this by adding after images to her attacks. Due to her speed and attacks she is very much able to knock opponents off of their guard and off their feet as well. Her wall jump only aids in her aerial acrobatics to dance around opponents. Unfortunately, her glaring down fall is that she is neither powerful nor able to take damage. With her, its best to stay on the move and pressure like hell. Float like a butterfly and sting like a bee! Thats the way to play Footee! lol. ok. bad joke, But seriously, try to stay on the move, so that your opponent won't be able to tell where to attack or be able to guess where your next attack will come from. LIGHTNING Take Footee and add a dash of Yashaou and you get Lightning. Lightning has decent speed, attack power, and isn't hindered when he tosses a sword. His power may be lacking but his slash and slice attacks can keep most opponents away from you if need be. His speed, although less than average, has the potential to be the fastest in the game. Once his BOOST mode is activated, he is able to run past even Footee! However, unlike Footee, he doesn't exactly have the "acrobatics" to dance around opponents, so the added speed doesn't help him avoid many attacks. Instead, use it to help get in close and initiate combos. Outside of BOOST mode, try to stay away from your opponent as Lightnings' game seems to be keep away. All of his specials have decent priority, and are a great way to punish your opponents for their mis-judgings. **Plusminus points out about LIghtning armed vs "unarmed": Some moves do the same damage either way (generally kicks), many moves do a bit more damage armed. A few moves do a bit more damage unarmed for some weird reason, notably d,u+attack and f+B. The timing on most moves seems identical but I didn't test this much. Additionally, the following moves (and maybe some others I missed) are different: - Jumping C can cancel to AB only when armed. - Ducking C cancels only when unarmed, but if it hits you can't actually connect with anything else. - Standing C is a lot easier to cancel into AB and hit when armed, at least for me. - b,f+AB gets less hits when unarmed. ZAM - B Zam - B is great for hit and run tactics. With his wall jump, double jump and his crawl, he can avoid just about any attack (aerial or otherwise) thrown at him. And due to his small stature, and the way he walks, a decent amount of attacks can fly over him. And, if he's unarmed, what doesn't fly over him, he can usually crawl under. Add to the fact that his Metal Slap, and other attacks, come out quickly and you see he’s able to catch people off guard and cancel their attacks. However, his attack strength does leave something to be desired, as does his defense. Though, if you are constantly on the move, his low defense shouldn't pose much of a problem. In the right hands, this guy can be a real annoyance! | ARMED | UNARMED +-------------------------------+------------------------------------- | | | Acrobatic | Even more acrobatic | | | Most attacks are single hit | Most normal attacks are multi hit | | | Average attack range | Short attack range +-------------------------------+------------------------------------- PlusMinus has this to add: "Zam-B I never use at all, so I can't say much here... he seems to have more "trick" moves that are good for hit and run style while unarmed, maybe? His super is much better unarmed than armed, and fairly useful since it doesn't take so long to charge, but his qcb+AB when armed is one of his best moves. But really, I don't find him to be a very good character either way..." ALICE Possibly my most favorite character, and the character most hated to be played against when used correctly. Alice's attacks can literally come out of no where. Her Dead Up can easily pop an unexpecting player into the air. Not to mention since her regular attacks aren't so "regular", they too can catch opponents off guard. Her EX Haunting is also great for putting up a barrier to halt oncoming attackers. She is also short so she is able to avoid a lot of attacks, like Zam - B, by merely ducking. Although, If you plan to play as her, you should also plan to put in a lot of time for practice. Its a little tricky at first to learn the timing and distance of her various strikes. Not to mention you shouldn't count on her BOOST mode or Super attack helping you much. Her BOOST mode seems to only add bonus hits to her A attacks, while her Super attack is hard to fully connect with, making getting full damage out of it hard. (although, if you can get full damage from it, its _almost_ worth it) Instead, rely on her EX attacks, which can be fast, powerfull and downright annoying! Also, make sure you use the range of her attacks to keep opponents as far away from you as possible. She probably has the worst defense in the game, so you don't want people in melee distance. Try to keep opponents at least 1 character length away, as most of her normal moves can at least hit that far away. While others can reach nearly a half screen length. ROSEMARY Rosemary has the defense and strength to fight up close if she wants. Or, if she chooses, she has enough reach to keep pressure on opponents from afar. She also has 2 Supers that are actually worth the chance of using. Her Mephistopheles is 3rd in power behind S. Geists' Superiority Sword and Goats AfterQuake. While her Army of Darkness nearly fills the screen with demons, causing your opponent to halt his assault or face severe damage. If you decide to activate her boost mode instead, her second sword actually provides her with enough power, that a lot of her small combos can take off close to 1/2 or more of a bar of energy. Her "teleport" is also a decent move, as it can get you out of those annoying corner traps or put your opponent in one! Its also a good way to balance out her somewhat slow walking speed. Downside to her? Well, she still has slow movement and attack speed and some of her special attacks also have horrid start up delays. Her projectile also leaves her wide open if it is dodged. TAROS Ah. the powerhouse of the game. Taros has the highest normal attack strength, the best defense and the best reach. He is also the slowest of characters. But with the size of his reach, and some of his various specials, that’s not exactly much of a downside. The majority of his normal moves hit half screen away. While some can hit 3/4 to all the way across! The bad thing about Taros is that he is very committed to his attacks. After he attacks, he kind of "hangs" there for a moment. Unfortunately, he doesn't eat hits while he's "hung" in an attack animation. Anything can knock him out of them. Up close, Taros is a devil to fight. While far away he can prevent opponents from doing almost anything. While fighting him, try to stay on top of him (literally), as all of his attacks go outward or downward. He has almost no anti air attacks. Finally, whatever you do, never let him get above you! His EX Aerial Blender is DEADLY if it connects! Able to take up to 75% to 100% of a bar of life away! CURFUE Probably the cheapest character in the game. But with a wielder of a gun, what do you expect? The majority of his B and C attacks fire off his gun for multi hits. And his special attacks allow him to nail you from across the screen with little chance of reprisal. So how do you defeat someone who has control of the screen? Attack him while he attacks you! Similar to Taros who is committed to attacks, most of Curfues attacks are mutli hit, which means he's wide open while his gun fires off multiple rounds. So when you see him about to fire his gun Jump over/Crawl under his lasers/bullets (or teleport if your Rosemary) and attack him while he's in the middle of an attack animation. He's also susceptible while in the air. Although, since his gun can be aimed, you have to get him from above or below. Thankfully, his defense is nothing great. S. GEIST You shouldn't need any info on him to help you win with him. In fact, if you loose as him, hang your head in shame and start sending me your money. Most of his noraml attacks hit at least 1/4 screen away or greater. They are also very powerful and hit multiple times. His Specials only add to those strengths as they have a large radius of attack. He also has the most powerful Super in the game. If you can get all of the hits to connect, it will take off 1 1/2 bars or more of health!! Even more, his ABC attack is able to cancel projectiles and some physical attacks! Weaknesses? umm... he can't crouch or duck? Other than that, I have no clue. His attacks have priority over most other attacks. And the length of his sword, and the way he wields it, allows him to hit almost anywhere on the screen. Best advice I can think of is to hit him from afar if you can. And use the Push Back every chance you get to try and knock him off balance. If you dizzy him, go in for your most damaging combo that ends with knocking him back. Also, as with Taros or Curfue, he is committed to some of his attacks. When possible, try to hit him as he is in his attack motion. Other than that... Pray. _______________________________________________________________________________ 7. S T A G E S _______________________________________________________________________________ DARK PRISON: A medieval torture chamber, lightly lit by torches. Jail cells and various torture devices can be seen in the background. An executioner patrols the cells. Skulls hang from the far right wall near a well(?). A dimly lit passage way is on the far left. CENTRAL GEO: A stone courtyard in front of an ancient oriental themed palace. The walls of the courtyard are decorated with stone carvings of warriors and demons. A stone city is seen behind the palace. All of which is surrounded by tall, slender mountains. WAR AFTER (Dusk): The aftermath of a battle that took place amongst the mountains. The ground is littered with skeletons and shafts of wood, probably used for armaments, housing and flag carrying. The Dusk setting covers everything in a crimson glow. WAR AFTER (Night): Same setting. Except now the white light of the moon is reflected by the falling snow. The added light now lets you see more detail of the slain warriors and the weapons they carried. The fallen warriors that litter the ground almost seem to watch the battle. FLOAT CASTLE (Ground): The battle takes place atop a lake (ocean?). Various sized mountains are floating in the background, and being reflected by the tranquel water. The mountains have buildings on them, over looking the water. The sky is of a warm palette of morning colors. Clouds are in the left portion of the sky. LOST ZONE: Appears to be the remains of an ancient, technological, civilization. The ground is covered with mounds of machinery. A giant cog and chain can be seen on the far sides of the background, as it alters your battlefields elevation. As the field changes, large robots and metal statues can be seen rising past you in the background. FLOAT CASTLE (Bridge): On a wooden bridge, in front of the Floating Castle. The battle takes place high up, as the ground can't be seen. It appears to be late evening, as the castle and the sky are covered in a fiery orange of a glow. The sky is filled with clouds. FLOAT CASTLE (Inside): Deep inside the mountain that holds the Floating Castle. The dark cavern is lit by a raging fire, far in the background. This is where you battle your characters Doppleganger. DRAGOON PALACE: A beautiful, but eerie palace adorned with sky high pillars. The dark battle ground is lit by a single flaming torch. In the background, a long stairway leads to a throne with a giant serpent like face above it. The pillars on either side of the throne is enthroped with a stone dragon. The midnight sky is littered with blackened clouds. _______________________________________________________________________________ 8. S W A T _______________________________________________________________________________ PLAY AS THE BOSSES: Play as Curfue: After choosing your character, and before the map screen shows up, hold down and Start until the battle begins. This must be inputted before every battle you wish to play as him in. Play as S. Geist: After choosing your character, and before the map screen shows up, hold up and start until the battle begins. This must be inputted before every battle you wish to play as him in. TIPS AND HINTS: If your new to this game, I recommend playing as Yashaou or Taros. Yashaou because he is the most well rounded, with no real weaknesses yet has enough variety to let you get your feet wet in the basics of this game. Taros because his strength and reach allow you to easily keep most enemies at bay while you whittle their health down. In the case of most characters (Alice specifically) don't bother using super attacks. Instead use your EX attacks, as they are generally as powerful or close to it and are able to be used more often. They also are usually more easy to work into combos. Where as ABC attacks are generally useless, DON'T forget about your bash attacks. They can be invaluable. Not only are they great combo starters (both on ground and in air) but they are also very good for getting the opponent away from you, so you can get some breathing room, or to just try to raise your special bar that extra little bit. The characters, for the most part, have very distinct fighting styles. So if you're still getting used to this game, don't always choose your character based on looks. Instead, try to choose a character that’s more akin to the style you play. I.E. Alice for pokers, Footee/Lightning for speed or Taros for power. If your having trouble with a particular battle hold down the button sequence for one of the boss characters. After you thoroughly whoop the problematic character, you will revert to your original chosen character after the battle, so you won't have to feel too bad about cheating ... much =b GLITCHES: UnnamedFer has informed me that if you have an Arcade emulator (such as MAME) that allows you to play this game and activate cheats you can witness some pretty interesting, though not always helpfull, glitches. The majority of the effects that can be witnessed are caused by activating at least 1 of 2 things. Either by giving you (and/or your opponent) infinite health or by giving you (and/or your opponent) infinite super meter. Some of the effects that have seen are: Extra Moves. For Example, Footee can sometimes do a special air dash. Computer controlled Zam-B will sometimes do a move where he hangs from the wall or ceiling Rosemary will sometimes do her Dark Helios attack while standing on the ground. (i.e. not rise into the air) Wrong Visual/sound effects: Sometimes when you do a Push Back, you'll get the effect that you're performing an EX attack. I've also had Taros use Zam-B's sound effects and voice If you can find other way to perform these glitches, or if you find other glitches that can be performed. please let me know. I'm always looking for a reason to play this game instead of doing actual work. XD _______________________________________________________________________________ 9. R U M O R S _______________________________________________________________________________ I received an email the other day telling me about various things that I apparently missed while writing this FAQ. Unfortunately, the writer was unable to tell me how to access what was mentioned as he used a tile viewer on the ROM to see them. Since what he told me matched previous rumors I have heard, I did some research on the internet and found many other people talk about the same or similar things. But, again, no methods of attaining them were mentioned. Unfortunately, as a power surge a few months ago destroyed my JAMMA board of this game, I am unavailble to try and find ways to access these for myself. So, I have decided to add a rumor section listing what I have been told and read about, until I, myself, am able to verify them and how to access them. I plan on replacing my board soon, so plan on a update of this FAQ shortly, with something more than just rumors. ^_^ And now, with out further ado, heres what may be possible! BONUS STAGES: There is apparently at least one bonus stage, but some people have referenced two. -The first one, and the one that most people agree on, is accessible after the third match and is comprised of your character batteling wolves and/or a wolf character named Cerberus, in a stage called "Dog Fight" *Fernando has confirmed that at least Cerberus' sprites, and the stage name, are in the game so it is probable that this rumor is true. He has also sent me pictures of the character which I have posted here (for the time being): http://www.geocities.com/far_gorta/AsuraBlade.html * *PlusMinus adds this little trick that lets you see what may be how the bonus stage handles: I found more evidence that there was supposed to be a bonus stage (assuming it's not just really really hidden) while playing with MAME cheats. Setting the RAM value of the background number to a certain value results in Footie's stage background but with unused music, and a timer of only 20 seconds. If you want to see/hear it yourself, enable cheats and then add this line to your cheat.dat :asurabld:00000000:401FDB:00000006:FFFFFFFF:BonusStage -The second bonus stage is apparently a battle against a character named Doppleganger. Fernando, again using a tile viewer, was able to see that this "character" is basically nothing more than a statue resembling the Grim Reaper. And with no sprite other than the statue, it is guessed, by the name, that he most likely transforms into a random character or is similar to Shang Tsung (from Mortal Kombat) and shape shifts during the fight. *UPDATE: I received an email from Kenneth Maramara confirming that Doppleganger is not a secret battle as rumored, but it is indeed the battle before Curfue where you battle your characters Shadow. If you loose this battle, it says "Doppleganger wins"* I have heard rumors of various other bonus stages, but with many various descriptions of what they could be. So to avoid any unnecessary extra rumors, I won't post them. At least not until I can find people that can provide similar, if not exact, descriptions. S. GEISTS TRANSFORMS!: Of the more interesting rumors that caught my attention is the fact that S. Geist (the final boss who is already abusrdly strong) has the ability to transform into 1 of 3 differnt dragons! Each with its own powerful move set. The dragons are of 3 different colors and possibly sizes. The colors are Red, Blue, and Gold. With Gold being so large that only the head and arms can fit in the screen! Maybe the key to these transformations are in his Mask of the Earth special move that has baffled me for so long. Then again, with screen caps that Fernando just sent me of the english version of the ending, these dragons (or at least the gold one) may possibly end up being an extra boss battle with a creature dubbed "The Superior Dragon" *I have posted the screen shots Fernando sent me here: http://www.geocities.com/far_gorta/AsuraBlade.html * EXTRA CHARACTERS: Even though none of the rumors have mentioned extra characters that you can play as, they have mentioned of extra characters that you can battle against, such as Cerberus and Doppleganger (mentioned above). Here are the other hidden characters that people have been talking about: Vebel: Described as a large slug like creature with powerful moves that can rival S. Geists! Is apparently a mid-boss you can fight after your 3rd or 4th battle. *NOTE: No longer a rumor. It has been confirmed that Vebel is not in Asura Blade, but is a hidden character in the sequel, Asura Buster* Sittara:I was unable to find any description of this character, or how it fights other than he is similar to Yashaou, but his attacks conisist of a black flame. I was able to find that only Yashaou can fight this character, and this battle only happens after your battle with S. Geist. As many times I have beaten this game with Yashaou I don't ever remember an extra battle after S.Geist, so I can only assume special conditions must be met, that I have never accomplished *NOTE: No longer a rumor. It has been confirmed that Sittara is not a hidden character in Asura Blade, but a normal character in the sequel Asura Buster* ????: I have also found rumors that state certain characters can fight an extra battle after they have defeated S. Geist. The rumors didn't state who this battle is against, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the next rumor... Super Dragon: Fernando has recently sent me screen shots of the english version of the games ending, and in it, there are references that S. Geist is trying to raise a creature called "The Superior Dragon" Going by the rumors that there is one more battle after S. Geist, I'm beginning to think that the Superior Dragon is the rumored "extra" boss after S. Geist ENGLISH MODE: Its in there! I've seen screen shots! now we just need to find out if its accessible! *I have posted screen shots of the English ending here: http://www.geocities.com/far_gorta/AsuraBlade.html* RESTORE YOUR LIFE: Ya, Ya. I know I posted earlier how to restore life, but I feel as that method isn't the one I've read about in various reviews. For example, in a german review that I had a friend translate for me, it talked about a "spell" (i'm assuming they are referring to a special move) that characters can cast to restore a decent portion of life. And that seems more akin to what people are referring to. So, for the time being, I'm going to keep this in the rumors section. And just a recap. Incase you missed the other two times I posted it, if you want to see the screen shots that Fernando sent me, you may access them here (for the time being):http://www.geocities.com/far_gorta/AsuraBlade.html I have no intention of taking them down, but geocities has a habbit of deleting my files without my notice. Finally, if anyone has any knowledge what so over concerning these, or any other rumors, please let me know! You will be given proper credit in the thank you section. _______________________________________________________________________________ 10. Q AND A _______________________________________________________________________________ Q: Do the elements have any effect? A: Yes. They add extra damage to the attack they are used with. And, in the Case with Ice, it adds extra properties, such as freezing the opponent. Q: Is any one element better than the others? A: Not really. Other than graphically, they're all about the same, with just minor differences. Q: Does Lightning have any unarmed moves? A: No. Since Lightning has 2 rapiers, and can only throw one, he is never fully unarmed. Thus, his special attacks are now performed with one sword instead of 2. Q: Does that weaken his attacks any? A: Not that I was able to determine. Only difference I found was graphically. Q: Can you play as the Boss Characters in a human vs. human match? A: It doesn't seem that you can Q: Any reason why not? A: My guess is that the boss characters are so unbalanced that it would ruin a 2 player experience, and it was opted to just not allow it Q: Well that sucks. Now how am I supposed to beat my friend/arcade geek/dog? A: The game isn't that hard to learn how to play. Just practice and try to become more proficient with bash attacks and push backs. And don't forget that after your knocked down, you can roll or jump up. If used correctly these can greatly allow you to knock or catch your opponent off guard Q: huh? A: PRACTICE! Q: How come you didn't list any combos? A: I felt that since you can link any attack into any stronger attack, combos were easy to create. And I didn't want to insult your intelligence by listing the obvious ^_~ Q: No, please. Insult me! At least list the infinite combos you found A: Maybe in a future update I'll list some of my favorite combos. But since the combo system allows you to create custom combos so easily, I feel no immediate need for it. As for the infinite combos, I doubt I’ll ever list them, as they are neither flashy nor powerful, Q: Well then, any hints? A: I'll just say this. Footees relies a lot on the bash attack. Alice’s does too, but no where near as much. And Curfues (whom I recently found) is just one move repeated constantly. I'll say nothing else on the subject Q: Why didn't you list the ending(s) to this game, like you did for previous games you wrote about? A: Like I previously mentioned, my Japanese is not that great. So any dialogue that wasn't written in English, I was unable to understand Q: But you were able to translate names of moves... A: That’s not a question... but anyways, I was able to do that because its easy to look up Kanji characters. Q: Are there any Hidden characters in this game, other than the bosses? A: Well, even though I don’t think its needed, I have heard rumors of at at least one hidden character. However, I have found absolutely no evidence that one exists. *UPDATE: As previously stated, Thanks to Fernando, we now know that at least 1 hidden character exists!* Q: I read a review about this game, and it was stated that it was possible to restore your health. How can that be done? A: Ya, I read some reviews that mentioned the same thing. But none of them listed how to do it. I also have found no way to activate it myself. I'm guessing that one site reviewed the game with out fully playing it and other sites sheepishly followed in suit. You know how the internet is... Q: I have discovered information on one of the rumors/about a new rumor. what should I do? A: If your able to confirm/deny a rumor. Please contact me at Shen_long36@hotmail.com, or, you can try to instant message me over AOL IM at Aughiskies. Q: What happened to your copy of Asura Blade? How long until you can try and confirm any of these rumors? A: As I stated above, during a storm a while back, a power surge happened and fried my JAMMA board and rendered my copy nearly unplayable. However, as this was one of my favorite games, I planned on purchasing another copy shortly. However when I can, depends on how long until I can raise a spare $225 dollars US. As thats the cheapest I have been able to find another board for sale. Q: Thats a lot of money, i'd like to help you reach it. do you have a Paypal account? A: Well thanks for your generosity! =D but I no longer have a paypal account. Those bastards locked me out of it, then closed it down on me! they apparently took me transfering money into my paypal account to buy various things on eBay as money laundering. So as I am now lost of the money I had in there, I have decided to boycott them, and advise others to do so as well. Or at least be weary of what may happen. Q: I've read over your character synopsis, and found them to be lacking. are going to improve them? A: Ya, I've been reading over them myself lately, and realized they aren't very helpful. So I'm planning to do a complete overhaul when I get time. I'm also planning on probably doing some in depth characer FAQs too. Q: Any final words? A: TO ARMS! _______________________________________________________________________________ 11. C O N T A C T I N G M E _______________________________________________________________________________ As usual, if you have anything you want to say to me, I prefer to be contacted in 1 of 2 ways. You can either send me an Email at Shen_long36@hotmail.com or, if you have AOL IM, you can IM me at Aughiskies. I'm a pretty easy going guy, so I accept messages and emails from just about anyone. So please don't do anything to make me change that. Just so you know, I am almost never on AIM (or any other messenger) anymore, as I just rarely care too. But if you do catch me on and wish to say something, I will generally be more than willing to talk with you as long as I'm not busy. Finally, you can also get a message to me by posting on the Asura Blade board at GameFAQs. I've checked that board nearly every day for the past 2 years, and I imagine I'll keep doing it for some time to come! _______________________________________________________________________________ 12. T H A N K S _______________________________________________________________________________ As usual, I'd like to thank the state of Pennsylvania for making it so DAMNED hard to find a job! Cause, if I was out there actually earning a living instead of slothing in front of my computer and local newspapers trying to find work, I wouldn't of been able to create these FAQs. Ranting aside, I'd like to thank GameFAQs for initially hosting this, and all my other FAQs Also want to thank whoever the hell got me this game (I honestly don't remember how/when I got it @_@), But Thanks =D Can't forget to thank to Fuuki for making such a great game. OH! and I want to say thanks to JW International for making such great stress relievers! (in case your curious, they hand make asian weaponry such as katanas, naginatas, Chinese broad swords etc...) I'd also like to thank Fernando <ferchu2003@arnet.com.ar> for the help he has given me in finding new things in this game that I have originally missed. And for bringing back my interest in playing this game to death again. And I can't forget to thank Kenneth Maramara <whitewolf13@tampabay.rr.com> for confirming that Doppleganger isn't a hidden extra battle, just a normal battle. And Final Thanks to GameFAQs member PlusMinus who's various info he posted on the message board gave me enough information to finish this guide. _______________________________________________________________________________ 13. Performed final editing. 9/30/2004 - Fixed some spelling and gramatical erros. as well as made some sentances more readable. 4/2/2005 - Received an email about various things I missed while creating this FAQ. Looked into them, and found even more than what I was told about. Created a rumors section, and posted them there. 4/4/2005 - Fernando sent me various screen shots that confirmed that at least the sprites of various other characters are in the game. Also showed me screen shots of the english version of the games ending. 4/7/2005 - Just some minor fixes and tweaks around the guide. 4/10/2005 - received information regarding Yashaous and Zam-B's boost mode. Also discovered a few extra misc. moves for Zam-B 4/15/2005 - added some things to the char synopsis section to prepare for the overhall I want to do. 4/17/2005 - Tried to talk a little more about unarmed combat with the three people that can fight unarmed, but I feel I wasn't able to explain it very well. Help would be appreciated ^_^ 11/2/2005 - Still not the complete overhaul that I wanted to do, but I added a glitches section to let people know of some interesting effects that can be done by using MAME. 7/23/2006 - Again, not the overhaul. But I have added various new information and helpful tidbits as well as fixing various errors through out the guide. Also, I have added a link to where I have stored the screen shots that Fernando has sent me, so that others may see what he has found. Finally, I feel that this guide is finished. Save any major new information I am told or am able to find, this is the last update of this guide. However I will always be willing to read emails sent to me regarding this, or other guides I have done. Thanks to all that have helped me and those that have read this. 12/02/2007 - PlusMinus sent me a bunch of information and corrections that I needed to make. Most important of which is the list to reset damage for combos. I added a section called Advanced tactics just for that!
