Mission 1 on Villeneuve Mt. System
ABSOLUTE THICK FOREST

Start your mission by shooting or hacking down the scattered rebels with your handgun or knife. Pick up as many Heavy Machine Gun power-ups to initiate rapid-fire mayhem, freeing hostages along the way. Before reaching the river, you'll be assaulted with an R-Shobu heli. The Machine Gun works wonders against these. Now work your way through the enemy encampment by the river, sniping rocket-throwing divers and killing sergeants to replenish your ammo. Soon will be your first chance to acquire the Metal Slug. Harness the power of its cannon well to destroy the huts of the rebels. Use its vulcan cannons to eradicate another R-Shobu and a group of Girida-O tanks as you near the waterfalls. Near the end of the stage, there are 2 huge cliffs with waterfalls. Each cliff hides 2 hostages to add to your count. As you near a huge dilapitated wing, you come to face the ruins of the gunship known as...

TETSUYUKI

Even though it is unable to fly anymore, rebels have taken refuge inside as a (humorously) makeshift fortress. As the first boss, the Tetsuyuki still poses a formidable threat with its salvo of arcing energy bolts as well as a laser cannon on its side as its main weapon. Jump or crouch accordingly as the cannon prepares to fire its beam. Empty your Slug's supply of shells to do extreme firsthand damage and unload your vulcans on it. If you don't have a Slug, get some Rocket Launcher ammo from the nearby hostages and the sergeants that come out of the gunship for your first victory.

Mission 2 in Ronbertburg City
A WISH FOR A MORNING GLOW

Kill the camping enemies at the distance and free the hostage. Crawl below the electric pylons and quickly kill the sergeant for a flamethrower. Have fun burning down the floating paratroopers while evading their bazookas. Proceed to the bridge and take a tricky dive to get the item in the lower corner for a big point bonus. Shoot down the rebels and use rocket launcher ammo to sink the Hammer Yangs in the water. Keep watch as rebels try to keep it afloat while others will attack. After downing 3 boats, go onward for a showdown with a Di-Cokka and a Mini Bata hiding in a hut's rooftop. Both of them will fall easily under the shotgun's immense power. Go up the railing and fend off the aggressive rebels till you board the Metal Slug. Shoot down the rebels while taking down a fleet of Flying Tara. After clearing them, kill the sergeants to replenish your fuel and cannons while boarding the freight train. The rebel commander's bomber plane flies in to begin its counterattack.

The Riberts has a wider arsenal of attack, starting with an erratic missile fired under the bomber. While this can be easily fended off, be sure to dismount once the Riberts flies into the upper-right corner to drop a salvo of bombs. These explosives will bounce around the train, and they can be evaded much easier on foot than inside the Slug. Keep it in mind that you are invincible for a while after dismounting the Slug, so use the tactic to conserve your Slug's lifespan. Once the bomber suffers damage, a soldier will launch heat-seeking missiles from its cabin. Destroy it further and General Morden himself enters the fray, firing his own rocket launcher. Shoot off his rockets with your constant offensive of cannon shells and vulcan gunfire until the Riberts is obliterated, prompting Morden to escape in a Flying Tara.

HAIRBUSTER RIBERTS

Mission 3 in Kärthehirt Valley
IRON CAVALRYMEN IN HELL

The heroes begin at the foot of snow-covered cliffs. Jump your way to the top of the mountain as you face more aggressive gunfire from rebel grunts and paratroopers. Midway to the top is a small rebel base where you need to shoot the huge button to raise the door and blast it with the nearby TNT. After more encounters with rebels and massive snowballs, the apex pits you a fight with Morden's righthand Allen O'Neal. Avoid his machine gunfire, his grenades, and away from melee range. Be sure to shoot from a safe distance until you defeat him and proceed to the rebel's hideout guarded by an Iron Iso. Smash their well-guarded base with rocket launchers and shotguns until you reach their brick fortress. Detonate the TNT and behold the base collapse and rebels fly into the air. Board the Metal Slug and shoot your way against several Girida-Os until you reach the cliffs with a snowy clearing below, alerting you with the arrival of a massive siege tank.

TANI OH

The Tani Oh is equipped with a laser artillery as its weapon, with two auxiliary cannons being its main mode of attack at the beginning of the battle. These cannons toggle between firing its gatling guns or laying mines on the ledges. On foot, you need to jump constantly during the battle while unloading your Rocket Launcher down on the boss. With the Metal Slug, continuously fire your vulcans downward while using a few cannon shells to destroy each auxiliary turret. With both turrets gone, the laser cannon initiates its slow but powerful beam attack. It will constantly aim and fire at you, but resume your vulcan gunfire while using up your supply of grenades and cannons to obliterate the Tani Oh for good.

Mission 4 on the Ridge 256
DEATH VALLEY

The seemingly deserted Valley of Death is now home to the rebels, flanked by its infantry and tanks alike. A Metal Slug can be obtained early in the stage, and you have to keep its survival to breeze through the stage. Keep in mind that rebel-fanatics can now climb en masse over the Slug and try to damage it with grenades or disable the Slug's cannon. After smashing the rebels' pub, trek through the trench heavily-guarded by Bull Chans on the cliffs while Di-Cokkas, Girida-Os and rebels rain fire toward you. Past those forces await Melty Honeys and an array of bunkers. Use your cannon shells to full effect here and decimate their remains with your vulcan cannon. After destroying the last bunker at a stony incline, you enter another cave. Use the lower ledge to free a pair of hostages as the mission's main targets enter into battle.

SHOE & KARN

The twin tanks arrive from opposite directions, pincer-style. It is imperative that you stay on the lower-right side as it gives you the necessary space to shoot from a safe location without being caught in the tanks' kill zone. Shoe and Karn attack identically with a stream of fireballs from their main cannon and the occasional homing missile from its rear. Unload your machine guns or vulcan cannon on the lower tank first. Sergeants run out time by time from the upper right corner, so kill them to replenish your ammo. Once Karn is out of commission, Shoe is a complete sitting duck if you attack it from below, much moreso with the power of the Slug's cannons. As long as you never allow the tanks to get close and run you over, this boss is a breather compared to the battles to come.

Mission 5 in Gerhardt City
THE CITY UNDER DESPOTISM

The city has been besieged by the rebel forces. In the commercial district, start by shooting down windows to kill any hiding soldiers; shooting the top-center window destroys the entire building at once, befalling all hidden soldiers and dropping all loot within. Continue to fend off enemy gunfire and use parked cars as refuge if possible. Shoot the treetops to reveal several hostages inside. After 6 buildings of the commercial district, you can board a Metal Slug to enter the residential district. It may seem a walk in a park at first with just running over cars and rebels, but prepare for squadrons of Eaca-B locking guided missiles at you. The vulcan is extremely effective to bring down these aircraft. Past the area are two rebel outposts with thick armored doors and a rocket turret above. An R-Shobu helicopter and a Landseek corners you on the first one, while another replica of the twin tanks arrives on the second one. You must be able to repel the incoming forces from your back, (especially the rebels who try to disable your Slug) as you tear down each gate. After destroying kamikaze bikers and bazooka sidecars, a stream of rockets fly past you, indicating the arrival of the rebels' sentinel.

This massive tank eliminates anyone who tries to escape the city alive. Alone, it mainly attacks with its rocket launchers and a cannon that fires a constant stream of energy bullets. Avoid them at all costs and never ever get too close to the front of the tank. Continue doing damage to it with either your Slug's vulcan, machine guns or rocket launchers. When you have done enough damage to the tank, its tires get flat and elevates itself while revealing a flamethrower cannon underneath it. Stay out of its range and resume fire on it until its demise, freeing 3 hostages inside. Rush underneath the tank as it attempts to salvage whatever it takes to defend itself. The Girida-O above will launch its cannonballs while the Nokana shoots homing missiles to track you down from the left and right sides. Keep your aim upward, shooting stray missiles on your way and unload the rest of your cannons and grenades and the Iron Nokana is history. IRON NOKANA

Final Mission in the Straits of Traven
THE MEMORIAL SEA

The last mission is at hand and the longest stage in the game. The enemies here are extremely relentless, rebels and vehicles alike, with a lot of instances you are trying to fend off enemy fire from almost all directions. You start off at the lush edges of a cliff surrounded by rebels and guarded by an Iron Iso. Onwards to the bridge you have to contend with a massive battalion of vehicles and rebels. As much as possible, try to be on middle of the screen yet in constant move to avoid a crossfire or being run over by new vehicles. Morden will soon blow-up the end segment of the bridge, causing you and hostages to plummet down to a submarine floating below you. Board the mounted machine gun to shoot paratroopers, sidecars and Flying Taras. Take the Metal Slug from one of the collapsing bridges, and use the most of it till the very end of the stage. Once the submarine washes ashore, there are a few coins hidden in the water before entering the trickiest crossfire area in the mission. Shoot the rebels' rockets and bowling bombs while keeping eye on the R-Shobu helicopter dropping bombs on you. Continue fire on the helicopter and kill a few more rebels to reach the enemy's airport and the final battle itself.

Morden faces you personally from inside his own gunship. The Hi-Do has a wide arsenal of attacks. Its gatling gun is mainly used when the player is on the ground, scattering bullets around that area. It can also scatter small homing rockets in an attempt to overwhelm the player; these rockets are easily destroyed with the player's shots. If ever the Hi-Do retreats from the screen, it goes on the uppermost portion to carpet-bomb the screen with multiple explosives. Shoot down these bombs or stay between the falling explosives to avoid them. If the player is on the ledges, Morden himself will use his launcher to fire missiles. Unload all your ammunition and grenades against the final boss. The Metal Slug's cannon will work wonders in terms of damaging the Hi-Do. As long as you can evade the plethora of attacks the Hi-Do sends your way while keeping open fire on it, the Peregrine Falcon soldiers will defeat Morden and save the day. Congratulations for beating the game!
