Background
This Mod, which is still very much in its infancy will attempt to bring the once-forgotten universe of Renegade Legion to the FSOpen engine. The basic premise is in many ways similar to Star Wars, with a band of rebels and their alien allies fighting against the oppression of an evil Empire in an effort to restore the lost ideals of the Republic. The original Renegade Legion boardgame, Interceptor, was designed at first to handle Star Wars dogfights. But when FASA failed to acquire the Star Wars license they instead developed their own intellectual property.
Where Renegade Legion differs is both in the finer details of the story and the technology itself. Combat was always more realistic with strategic newtonian combat. But the biggest difference was in Shield technology which unlike many other stories, were not ablative, but rather an all or nothing affair. A shield would have a chance of either stopping a shot completely, or not stopping it at all with no degradation in performance except due to damage.
The title of the game itself comes from the Renegade Legions, regular line soldiers who decided to become renegades when their government was usurped and perverted into what later became the Terran Overlord Government (TOG). At this time in the story, the Renegade Legions and their alien allies, collectively formed into the Commonwealth, attempt to stave off their inevitable defeat as they clinge to what territory they still have. The Renegade Legions, like their TOG adversaries, are modelled on the ideals and organization of the Roman Empire.
The de facto project team, is currently creating assets and looking into what capabilities the FSOpen engine can offer to help emulate the feel of the universe. With some luck, and assuming no waning of interest among the project members, it's theoretically possible that a basic demo may be released before the end of the year (2008).
