Here are some tips and strategies I have come up with during the last few days.. SOme are mentioned on this forum elsewhere, but here they are again then in 1 spot..

Mech choice..
Go with the medium mech always. The extra armor and ammo more than makes up for the lack of speed.. The heavy mech is waaaaay too slow even using burst, and the light one is made of paper.. The light one is ONLY an option on low-cash servers where none of the heavy weapons are.

Pick a theme!
One huuuuge laser backed up by a teeny MG is no way to go.. Most times it is by far the most efficient to pick identical weapons for each arm.. You only need to aim in one "style" and you don't suddenly run out of ammo on one of your weapons.. If you mix lasers and MG's, you'll have to pick up two types of main ammo which is rarely a good idea.

Shields
Unless you play on a really really low cash server go for the most expensive shield.. Skillfull shield usage seperates the good from the poor player.. More on that later..

Secondary weapons
The mortars are the most useful of these. Lots of ammo and high rate of fire makes these deadly.. Pick these to be mean!... Missiles are hugely expensive, has a low rate of fire compared to mortars and are generally not worth the money... Mines are the fun choice.. About the same price and ROF as mortars, but they work a little differently.. They land on the ground and work like, well, mines.. People have a tendency to charge their enemy, so the mine user only has to back up and spray mines to watch them suffer.

Control setup
Map primary mouse button for both your primary weapons, and map the secondary mouse for both your secondary weapons.. No need to split them up at all.. Remap shield to a good and fast position, you'll need it often, and do the same for boosting.. Stealth and jump is a little less important.

Boosting
I prefer to use sprint boosters as they have the most uses in my eyes. You can get away from an ugly fight, and you can get to that health/ammo pickup before your enemy.. The jump booster is nice for reaching hard to get places, but they are useless in a battle.. The strafing boosters are a nice idea, and they make you damn hard to kill, but unless you have godlike aim you won't hit anything either before you run out of booster fuel.

Pick a playstyle to match your primary weapons
If you have lasers, then don't go toe to toe with enemies but stay at a distance and snipe. If you have MG's get up close and personal while you strafe and dodge while putting extra kilo's of metal on your opponent.. This should be obvious, but I have seen soooo many players with dual lasers constantly charging ahead into close fights, and then loose because they can't aim fast enough or run out of ammo after 1 fight.. The opposite goes for the MG's. You can easily hit with them at a distance, but they are just as easily dodged, so get up close and very personal..

Get a bearing on pickups..
Don't run aimlessly around the maps looking for enemies, pick a spot and stay there.. Don't stand still though Wink.. Locate booster fuel and all necessary armor pickups in your vicinity, stay healthy and loaded at all times.. If you feel the need to relocate, then make sure to find a good spot as soon as possible on your new location.

Shields
Now these are probably the hardest to learn to use efficiently.. Most people just activate their shields at the beginning of a fight and then just drain them while they run around their opponent.
Watch for the right time to activate your shields! You need them when you run forward to get that health booster, or when you are out of ammo and enemies are shooting at you..
And...
When in a fight!
Most of the time people just let rip with everything they've got.. Especially mortars! So they fire off 10-20 mortar rounds at you at the beginning of a fight.. This is when you activate your shield.. Just wait his barrage out, and as soon as he takes a break to get his bearing on you again you deactivate your shield and open up with all you've got.. When he starts another barrage, put shields up again (that's why you need fast recharging shields) and repeat the process.. The timing here is critical.. Also never ever activate your own shield while your opponent has his up.. If you can't shoot him, he can't shoot you either!
When you meet an opponent with active shield then don't start firing immidiately. Wait a few seconds and then open up - wven though his shields are still up. You'll have your aim down and he'll be in a world of hurt the microsecond his shields go offline

That was it for now..

good stuff. although i really like the panther and strafe jets. i think the strafe jets are the best. you can dodge with them, you can still run away with them (just have to strafe towards where you want to go), although it's a little harder, but yes they do make it hard as hell to be hit and to hit.

a note on the strafe jets, just like shields you have to use them correctly. i usually take dual lasers with them so i like to shoot some rounds into the opponent, strafe around a bit, shoot some more, strafe shoot, strafe shoot. so your never actually strafing while shooting unless the fight is close. this results in either me killing them or the opponent running away more often then me dying.

I disagree. Jump jets can make mortars useless, and have the advantage of being useful in combat. By your own definition sprint jets arent useful in combat, because as you say, theyre best for running away from fights and hunting health packs. You might say sprint jets are good against mortars, but really all they have to do is lead the target a little more. Against a close or (or even mid) range mortar, a jump jetter can boost above it and tear into the target, and often the mortar will still be aiming at the ground below you.

Good points actually...

I would probably still find the sprint jets more useful more often, mostly because you can't stay airborne that long with the jump jets.. When someone uses jumpjets against me I just rip them to shreds because they can hardly move when in the air.. But against mortar loving noobies, sure, they would be good there..

Theres enough ammo around the maps to find both when you need them and most of the time laser and mg ammo will be close enough for you to grab. Also Sometimes there right next to each other Make for easy pick up and when you have a laser and a Mini gun You have the best of both worlds sniping and gunning them down. Just spray them with your mini gun and fire the laser when you get a good shot. Sheilds Are only good for picking up health most of the time people would notice that your sheilds are on and stop shooting and wait for the sound of your sheild powering down. Good for runnng Away for ammo too. Sprint jets also for retreiving ammo. To avoid motars yes jumping is a good idea but not for a long time just the normal jump on the mech is good enough no jump jets and panthers quick enough to get out of the way. Missiles are good for shooting at slow mechs. Motars also. Mini guns good for shooting the panther down at med or close range, lasers are good at any range. Most powerful weopon but low ammo.
