Mission Five
Mission Objective: Destroy the installation inside Durgen, the local military city. Proceed through a heavily defended valley and destroy the gate at Op. Charlie.
Primary Objectives: Destroy urban complex at Op. Baker. Blast open corridor gate at Op. Charlie.
Secondary Objective: Take over loading dock at Op. Dog. Defeat Smoke Jaguar Forces.
Difficulty: Medium
Mech Recommendation: Heavy Mech loaded with long-range weaponry and a TAG.
As indicated in the mission briefing, take along a TAG to destroy the gate at Op. Charlie, though it really isn't necessary - the gate can be destroyed without it. Of all the missions thus far, this one requires the most patience on your part. There are loads of tough Mechs on this level, and if you don't take your time to face off against them with the odds in your favor, you might get frustrated as you restart the level over and over again.
Though not necessary, it's wise to head straight to Op. Dog and get rid of the forces there. If you don't, some enemy Mechs and vehicles could sneak up on your Mobile Field Base causing problems later in the mission. On your way to Op. Dog, two light Owens Mechs will attack from the left and a Puma will emerge from the loading dock at Op. Dog. Take out these relatively easy Mechs and continue to Op Dog and eliminate the two bulldog tanks patrolling the dock.
Though a secondary objective, capturing the loading dock at Op. Dog is an easy task and one that could protect your rear flank against a late attack. |
Around the time you capture the dock, an Annihilator and a Vulture power up near Op. Able, dangerously close to your MFB and the start position. From Op. Dog, you should have an excellent long-range viewpoint at the Annihilator and Vulture. Use your long-range weaponry, lasers and missiles, to blow apart these two Mechs from a safe distance. Advancing against the Annihilator is not recommended. Even ordering your lancemates to attack isn't the wisest course of action because they'll likely get ripped to shreds by the four autocannons. Instead, keep your distance and let you and your lancemates wipe out the Annihilator with long-range lasers.
Return to the MFB and refit (you also should consider allowing your lancemates to rearm themselves as they have likely shot a lot of missiles and autocannon rounds by now). Proceed through Op. Able by climbing on the structure. From atop this point, you'll have a good view of the military city beyond. Three bulldogs emerge and are easy pickings for your lasers from this point.
Next up are two Pumas roaming the interior of the city. It's also likely that an Avatar will power up to the right in the far distance. This Mech is over near Op. Charlie and shouldn't be worried about just yet. Instead, proceed slowly inside the city and use all available buildings as cover. Eliminate the two Pumas, being careful not to advance to Op. Baker just yet. Once the Pumas are destroyed, repair and rearm as necessary.
Return inside the city and target the urban complex structures from a great distance. After the first building is destroyed, two powerful Mechs, an Annihilator and an Avatar, power up just behind the structures. If you decide to take out these structures from close range, those two beefy Mechs won't take long in turning your Mech into scrap metal. So destroy the first building from a distance and let the two Mechs power up. What should follow now is a cautious cat-and-mouse game on the streets of this military city. Use all available cover and try to take each Mech out one at a time. Typically, the Annihilator stays well-hidden and the Avatar comes out to fight.
Damage the Avatar with long-range weaponry and return for repair as needed. Once the Avatar is destroyed, the Annihilator will likely retreat to Op. Charlie. If not, use the same technique in taking out the Annihilator. Keep in mind that both Mechs are armed with a ton of close-range weaponry and won't waste any time in ripping your Mech's limbs to pieces. Once the area is clear, approach Op. Baker and blow apart each of the buildings comprising the urban complex.
Face Op. Charlie and eliminate any Mechs still remaining from a distance (likely an Avatar is still alive at least). Begin your approach and about five defensive emplacements appear on radar. Keep your distance and destroy each emplacement. Keep advancing and you'll soon see an Annihilator protecting the final objective, the gate at Op. Charlie. If the Annihilator at Op. Baker retreated, it'll also be waiting at the gate.
Don't advance. Instead, snipe these Mechs from a distance of around 800 meters. They'll usually just stay near the gate so you shouldn't have much trouble taking off limbs and turning their armor into the red zone. In fact, if you get within about 700 meters of the Mech, some of your stray shots are likely to destroy the Op. Charlie gate. If not, then keep attacking the Annihilator's from a safe distance and approach the gate. Use the TAG weapon to call in an air strike to end the mission.
