Toughen up, Private! Think you're ready for live combat? We've put you through basic training and boot camp, and we think you're ready to be thrown into the fire. This section covers Operation Flashpoint's single-player campaign missions. Though you begin the game as a lowly private, following orders in an attack on the village of Morton, you soon advance through the ranks, command assault teams, and commandeer an assortment of powerful vehicles.
Keep in mind that Operation Flashpoint features very open-ended missions. There are typically several ways to complete the various objectives. Also, the computer-controlled artificial intelligence will respond differently from game to game. Use the following walk-throughs as a mission guide, but be prepared to employ many different movement and combat techniques to solve the tasks revealed below.
Training
Operation Flashpoint's training missions are fairly straightforward. Listen to the instructor and follow his orders exactly. If you disobey orders several times, you're forced to complete training again. Training is basically divided into three sections. Complete the first section by running to the truck and back. Then stand in formation with your fellow soldiers and holster your M16 on your back. Complete the stage by returning to the truck and climbing on board.
You're taken to a small obstacle course to test your movement skills. Once the instructor gives the word, complete the stage by running through, over, and under the obstacles. Look for the word "passed" to appear in the upper left corner upon completing a task. Run through the blocks at the end of the obstacle, then return into formation with your fellow soldiers to finish the stage.
The final training exercise takes place at the shooting range. Approach the ammo boxes, grab some M16 ammunition, and reload your weapon. Enter the third slot and shoot the dummy targets; you should also practice using the zoom function. Nail all of the targets and return to formation to complete your training.
Flashpoint--Everon, Near the Village of Morton
You're presented with the briefing during the helicopter ride and during the initial moments of the mission. After the copter lands, disembark and follow the mission leader to the trees at Ed69 to complete the briefing.
Briefing: We have to secure Morton, the village over that hill. We'll only be facing infantry armored units, and we have air support. We'll move into Morton from the left. When we reach the village, we'll wait for the air support. We'll move in and seize the village once the enemy's armored units have been destroyed.
Locate the village of Morton on the overhead map near grid reference Ea69. |
You'll spot the village of Morton on the map around Ea69. After the briefing, remain in formation and follow the mission leader and your fellow soldiers to the west toward Morton. You have plenty of assistance, including air support and M1A1 tanks. Scan the upcoming terrain for enemies and take cover behind trees or bushes or on the ground once enemy soldiers have been spotted.
Listen to the mission leader's orders and eliminate any enemy targets you are assigned. Avoid running too far ahead of your fellow soldiers or you may become a prime target for concealed enemies. The tanks, air support, and your fellow soldiers will complete much of the dirty work for you. Use caution once you reach the village in case armed enemy soldiers remain. The mission ends in success once Morton has been cleared of the enemy presence.
Combined Arms--On the Road Southeast of the Mountains
Briefing: Your objective is the village of Regina at grid location Fg81. Liberate the village in a combined operation with the help of mechanized infantry and the Bravo tank force. Approach the rendezvous point in a 5-ton truck along this road (located at grid location Fe70).
Objectives: Join with the Alpha mechanized infantry squad and the Bravo tank force. Await the order of attack from the cover of these trees (located at grid location Ff77). Seize the village of Regina.
Remain in formation with your squad. If you start moving out in front, you may become a target for enemy soldiers or vehicles. |
You begin the mission inside the truck. Listen to the conversation and get out of the truck when ordered. Follow the mission leader in formation to the bushes and then along the road to the south. You will continue over a hill to the southeast. Remain here until given the "Go" order from Papa Bear. This completes the first objective. Start moving toward the tree cover north of Regina.
Take cover along the line of bushes ahead. Remain with your fellow soldiers and listen to mission orders. You will spot a scattered group of enemy soldiers in the distance. An enemy APC and BMP are also moving toward your position. Remain behind cover, either along the line of bushes or behind a tree, and take shots at the enemy soldiers while remaining outside the line of fire of the APC or BMP. Let your tank support (M1A1 and M60) tackle the APC and BMP.
If you're daring, grab a rocket launcher (RPG)and some ammunition and take aim at the enemy tanks! |
Move slowly toward Regina. If you take the point, an enemy soldier may pick you off. Remain with your fellow soldiers and advance slowly toward Regina. Use all available cover as you approach the Regina buildings. Use caution inside the village to avoid any surprises. Clear Regina of enemy soldiers to receive your next mission objective.
Objective: We have T-80 tanks coming in from the south. Retreat immediately to Ff77.
Enemy T-80 tanks are on the move south of Regina. Now is definitely not the time to stick around and sightsee. Immediately follow the mission leader back to Ff77. The slower you move, the greater the chance the T-80 tanks will reach your position. You won't be able to survive long against one of these beasts. Retreat to position Ff77 to complete the mission.
TIP: It's possible to examine dead soldiers for an RPG and ammunition and then shoot the T-80 tanks. You'll find the task quite difficult this early in the game. Use the Regina structures as cover against the tanks and blast the enemy vehicles with the RPG. Should your shots fail, move quickly to position Ff77 to complete the mission.
