Briefing: In this mission, Lieutenant Armstrong, you'll be taking a paratrooper force into the south of Kolgujev, seizing the base that's already been softened up by air A-10s and then moving on to secure a second Soviet base. Your squad, Alpha, will be dropped onto the beach (located at grid location Ee74).
Objectives: Swiftly move up the hill to the first Soviet base (located at grid location Eb73) and mop up any infantry the A-10s missed. Prepare your troops for a substantial Soviet counterattack from the north and west. Reinforcements (Charlie team) will arrive as soon as they can (located at grid location Eb82). Defeat the counterattack. If enough of your troops have survived, move west to take the second Soviet base (located at grid location Df72). Charlie will assist.
You begin the mission attached to a parachute. |
You arrive at the mission area by parachute. Don't worry, there's no danger; simply float down to the ground and begin the mission. You have a squad of ten soldiers at your disposal, and they'll come in especially handy during the counterattack. It's wise to equip an M21 sniper rifle during the mission, which lets you snipe the incoming soldiers while your squad deals with the Soviet vehicles. You could also consider a LAW launcher along with the sniper rifle in case your squad doesn't perform up to par--you can destroy the enemy vehicles by yourself!
After you land, proceed west to the Soviet base at grid reference Eb73. You approach a hill first with the base just beyond the incline. Maneuver around the barbed-wire barricade. There are some Soviet guards inside the first base. Assign targets for your squad or take out the Soviet soldiers with your M21 sniper rifle. Enter the base to assume control. You're now ordered to hold the base from the imminent Soviet counterattack.
Maneuver to the northwestern area of the base. The Soviet counterattack arrives from the west and north, though expect the hill to the northwest to be the primary area of assault. Use your sniper rifle, if equipped, to take out any Soviet soldiers you spot on the hill. You may wish to send out a squad member to scout out enemy locations (though don't expect him to return in one piece). Assign your LAW launchers against the enemy BMPs once they get close enough to attack. You may also need to use your own LAW launcher, if equipped, or use one off a fallen comrade.
If you have enough squad members remaining after the counterattack, you may be called to assault the second Soviet base at grid reference Df72. Use your sniper rifle once again to whittle down Soviet soldier defenders. You receive some assistance from Charlie Squad.
Escape From Prison--Russian Base, Northwest Kolgujev
Briefing: You've ejected from your plane over enemy territory. Unfortunately Russian soldiers captured you straight away. You don't know what to expect now, but it's unlikely to be something nice. If the rest of the attack on Kolgujev has gone according to plan, NATO should now have some forces on the southernmost part of the island.
Objective: You've been captured by Soviet troops after ejecting from your plane in the mission Maverick. As the mission begins, you're under Soviet supervision. You're ordered to board the Mi24. Don't ignore orders. You may think it's possible to make a break for a nearby jeep, but the Soviet troops will wise up to your games and take you out before you can get too far. Instead, obey your captors' orders and board the chopper. You'll have opportunities to make an escape later in the mission.
Ride the Soviet chopper to the small base to await your fate...or to escape! |
You automatically ride the Mi24 to another Soviet-controlled section of Kolgujev. Disembark from the chopper after landing, and follow the leader (a Spetz Natz) into your new home--a barren tent. Remain in the tent during daylight. Don't attempt any escape maneuvers just yet; the Russian soldiers will react quickly to your escape attempts. Instead, allow time to pass (speed up game time if you wish) and wait for night to fall. A cutscene reveals the sun setting.
After night falls, take note of the BMP just outside your tent. There are a couple of guards between you and the BMP. Wait until both guards are facing away from you and make a mad dash for the BMP. Get inside the BMP as the driver and start heading east (the road is near the shoreline). You'll wind around the road to the south. You may be shot at, but don't stop for anything; the BMP is rather slow going up hills, so you need all the speed and distance you can muster. If you start going mind-numbingly slow up a hill, get out and start sprinting. A cutscene interrupts the action as you proceed into the mountains.
Upon the conclusion of the cutscene, simply keep running to the south. As stated in the mission briefing, NATO forces control the southernmost part of the island. Continue to run toward the south, being careful throughout the mountain sections, until you reach safe NATO territory and meet up with friendly allied soldiers.
