Briefing: NATO has conquered the southern part of Kolgujev, and we've destroyed Guba's nuclear missile. Soviet troops are plunged into chaos, and they're retreating to the north. All we need to do now is pick up the general. Intel reports that Guba left his residence (located at grid location Bg43) in a jeep with Colonel Eusev just a couple of minutes ago. He'll probably try to leave the island in a boat, because NATO now controls all airspace around Kolgujev. Find him and arrest him before he can leave. Commander Gastovski, you'll start here (located at grid location Fd47) with your squad.
Objective: Arrest General Guba before he leaves the island.
Another mission that showcases Operation Flashpoint's wonderful open-ended mission design, Red Dawn features many possible solutions. The following walk-through is just one of many possible solutions. Order your squad inside the nearby M113. Get inside the vehicle as the driver and proceed west along the road. Take a right at the small village. You'll reach a small Russian outpost at Ed46. The M113 gunner should make short work of the few Russian soldiers inhabiting the outpost.
You're well protected inside an M113. |
The Russian outpost contains a fuel truck and a chopper. The chopper is out of fuel. Get inside the fuel truck and drive up next to the chopper. Refuel the chopper using the action menu. Get inside the chopper as the pilot and order one squad member to board the Hind as a gunner. Ascend into the air and proceed west along the northern road. You'll soon spot a UAZ. It carries Guba, a driver, and a couple of Spetz Natz.
The easiest way to deal with the UAZ is to land the chopper along the road before the UAZ reaches the position. As the UAZ approaches, shoot the driver (don't shoot Guba!). The UAZ parks and a couple of Spetz Natz exit. Take out the Spetz Natz, then chase down Guba to make the arrest. You now have Guba under your control; you can even order him to take over a role inside a vehicle!
Objective: Be sure to deal with any last-minute surprises from Guba.
Arresting Guba creates one final mission objective. There's a SCUD launcher around Ih20 (search the adjacent sectors because the SCUD isn't always in the same spot) that you must deal with. It's far away, so you should use the Hind to reach the position. Enemy Shilka and antiair boats along the coast pose problems, however. Avoid antiair fire, and blast the SCUD to complete the objective.
You can use a captured Hind to seek out Guba and his SCUD launcher. |
TIP: If you fail to arrest Guba (for instance, if you shoot him), you're ordered back to base.
You can destroy the SCUD in a number of ways. You could even seek out the SCUD before killing Guba. You could comb the area around Ih20 and destroy all the enemy Shilkas so your captured Hind will be safe from counterattack. You could even locate and destroy Guba's getaway boat (though you still must capture Guba to complete the objective).
Status Quo--Heading to Everon Airport
Briefing: Friends from the 1985 "war" are planning to meet in a bar on Everon. You've agreed to pick them up and transport them to the bar. You'll start in the air heading to Everon, five minutes from the landing strip.
Landing the Cessna is tough...watch your speed! |
Objectives: Land at Everon, airport (located at grid location Di08) recommended. Meet with Robert (located at grid location Aj53, Lamentin). Meet with Sam (located at grid location Fi56, Laruns). Meet with David (located at grid location Fi67, an airbase). Go to the bar (located at grid location He87, Saint Pierre) with your friends.
Status Quo is your award for completing Red Dawn with optimum success. It's a simple mission that's more fun than work. You begin the mission inside a Cessna. Land the plane at the airstrip (or another airstrip or even on a road). It's a tough landing; slow the plane down to approximately 120-130mph before touching ground. You can also eject from the plane if you'd rather.
Thorough searching uncovers a variety of drivable vehicles within the villages. |
At the airfield, select a vehicle to seek out your comrades. You can take the sports car (located adjacent to the fuel station) or even a helicopter. Also, you are free to change vehicles throughout the mission. For instance, you may locate another car inside one of the towns, and it may come in handy if you accidentally crash the sports car into a tree!
You can pick up your friends in any order. Use the overhead map to follow the fastest route to each of your friends. Once you reach them, order them inside your vehicle as you would any squad member. Proceed to the bar once you have obtained all three friends to complete the campaign.
