Switching Game Types

In UT2004 when you start a match you select a game type and sequence through a map list containing maps of only that game type.  MapMixer approaches things slightly differently because each map in its map list has its own associated game type.  So therefore you could say that game types belongs to each individual map in a map list, not to the map list itself.  This means you can sequence through a map list, changing game types as you go.

To utilise Game Type Switching you must create a set of rules that can be used when switching game types.

The options for Game Type switching are found in the Setup Configuration section.

At this point you need to understand how map lists can be generated to understand when and how game type switching can occur.

User Created Custom Map Lists

When you create a map list using MapMixer's enhanced Map List Editor, it not only records the names of the maps you add but also the game types that the maps were added from.  After selecting Custom Map List as the map list source for MapMixer, you will have the option to enable Auto Game Type Switching.  If you enable this option then MapMixer will change game types for each map in a map list (assuming a valid Game Rules list exists).  If you don't enable Auto Game Type Switching then the entire map list will be played in the game type that the match was started with - regardless of each individual game type assigned to a map in the list.  So if you started off playing DeathMatch and your map list contains CTF maps and Auto Game Type Switch is off then you will play the CTF maps in DeathMatch!

Map Mixer Auto-Created Map Lists

Alternatively, if you don't want to create your own map list then you can have MapMixer auto-create a session map list for you.  To do this you must first create a Games List, which contains a list of Game Types that specifies what maps you would like included for each game type in the list.  When MapMixer starts it will then construct the session map list based upon these game types and maps.  There are various ways it can decide how to select each game type in the Games List. See Game Switch in the Configuration for the options.

How to Check That The Map List Is What You Wanted

Open the in-game Admin Menu and select the Map List tab.  The current map list will be displayed and you can see that everything has gone to plan.  If you are manually changing game types then you can also change game type here.
