Mission Sixteen: Hole in One

Objectives:

  • Establish a base on the planet
  • Discover the access point to the planet's interior
Northeast of your drop point are a couple of scrap pools; deploy the recycler there and churn out some scavengers. The rocket tanks will survive as a temporary defensive array until you build some more permanent defenses, but you should watch for Scion maulers that will soon attack the base.

Start building up some light attack units, then exit the base going north through a type of tunnel. Make the first left and you'll come upon the entrance to the planet core. You don't have to engage the guardians, but they can be annoying if you keep having to pass the tunnel.

You'll now be told that there is an incoming convoy - a hauler and two titans. It'll be tough with your light troops, but have them swarm over the titans, and you can pick off the rest from long range, almost at your leisure (but make sure you have backup units just in case). Once the convoy is destroyed, the mission is over.

Mission Seventeen: Core

Objectives:

  • Destroy the Scion core computer
This mission is kind of tough, given your meager resources: just you. The complex is made up of a series of tunnels and junctions. Each junction is guarded by two tough sentry robots that can rapidly deplete your shielding and that are somewhat tough to kill. About a quarter of them give up rejuvenation crystals when destroyed, but it might be easier just to run around them, as they won't follow far.

Some tunnels you need to go through will be covered by a force shield, so you'll need to locate adjacent power systems in nearby rooms. Each system looks like a tall translucent cylinder and needs to be destroyed to deactivate the nearby force shield (typically there are one or two cylinders for each shield). Each of these shield rooms also has one or two sentries guarding it, but if you quickly get to the other side of the cylinder complex, they typically won't follow or shoot. If you find yourself running low on ammunition, jump out of the tank and shoot at the structure with your rifle - it should take two or three charges' worth (or 100 to 150 shots with the rifle).

You'll need to destroy each of these light supports at the base. Look out for the seekers though.
Soon enough you'll reach the core, where you'll need to destroy each of the four light supports that hold it up. There are some rejuvenation power-ups lying around the chamber as well. Unfortunately, as soon as you start hitting the supports, seeker mines (they look like giant spiked balls) will come heading toward you from one end of the room. They can cause quite a bit of damage if they hit you, so the trick is to avoid getting hit while slowly whittling away at the light supports. Circle-strafing works somewhat. It and it is not recommended that you drop into the center, as getting back out again really slows you down (but could be worth it for the power-up within). Eventually you'll be hit by the increasing number of seekers, so use the power-ups carefully. Keep moving, however.

Once the four supports are destroyed you'll have 100 seconds to get back out to where you started. Save the game here, because portions of the tunnels you came back through will collapse, meaning you'll have to backtrack and take the alternate tunnel. If you backtrack more than once, you won't have enough time, so here's where the save game really comes in handy. Once you're out, that's the end of the campaign.
