Russian Campaign: Red Square
Stalingrad | Red Square | Train Station | Stalingrad Sewers | Pavlov's House | Warsaw Factory | Warsaw Railyards | Oder River Countryside | Oder River Town |
The heart of Stalingrad is Red Square, where the visage of you greatest leader remains standing as testament to Russian will. Pushing the Germans back will but a minor victory in a much greater war. This is just your first taste of combat in Russia... there's far more to come.
Objective 1: Retake Red Square
This is your overall objective for the mission, and one
that won't be completed immediately. Before you can truly retake Red Square,
you're going to need to get a weapon. That should be easy. Stay crouched and
follow behind a soldier with a gun. Chances are, he'll die quickly. Grab his
rifle and any ammunition you pass. The Germans are in too good of a position to
be taken out right now. Even an expert sniper will get torn to shreds. Don't
worry about killing Nazis yet, instead just worry about staying alive. that
means keeping low and behind cover as much as possible. As horrible as this may
sound, your best cover is to be behind a moving soldier. Use them as a human
shield.
Make your way to cover and head to the right to hook up with Sergeant Makarov. He'll tell you what you already know -- that you are FUBAR. He suggests you achieve a flanking position so you can work on taking out the Nazi menace. It's a good idea.
Objective 2: Find a good flanking position
To the right there's a Panzer tank waiting to strike.
You may get hit, but you have no choice other than to run to the right. Head for
the far right wall. As you near, bombs strike and blow a hole in the wall. A few
Nazis pop out. Take cover to the right. Marakov will handle them for you. Grab
an MP40 from a dead soldier and you're in business. Follow Marakov upstairs. You
can shoot the Nazis in the building across the street or leave them for later.
Stay crouched and lean out. There are loads of Nazis and with your limited ammo,
this is a no-win situation for now.
At the top of the stairs, along with some more Nazis, you'll find a Scoped Mosin-Nagant. Grab it and reload. You're gonna become good friends with this scoped rifle. Very good friends indeed.
Objective 3: Eliminate the officers in the enemy
blockade
There are four officers that need to be
taken out down below. They are dressed differently than your average soldier.
Look for hats instead of helmets. They'll be waving in for reinforcements. Kill
them first, because any soldier you kill will be replaced almost instantly. Two
of the officers are in the trench and two are on the steps of the building
behind the trench. The enemy will not fire on you, so there's no need for
cover.
Once the officers are downed, snipe the soldiers on the
field, then follow Marakov downstairs. The last piece to the Red Square puzzle
is getting rid of that tank. Fortunately, it's just a matter of waiting for the
air strike to nail it. Once that's done, Red Square is yours, however,
Stalingrad is still crawling with Nazis, so be careful.
Objective 4: Rendezvous with Major Zubov via the train
station
Your last portion of this mission is
rendezvousing with Major Zubov. Getting to him will not be a free pass, however,
as there are German snipers to contend with. Drop into the trench and head right
into a tunnel. Go through the tunnel and out the other side. There's a sniper in
the top window on the building to the right as well as a couple of Nazis on the
ground. Get low and take down these men quickly.
Make your way through the rubble. You'll run into several other Russian soldiers who will offer assistance. Be careful around these conscripted scrubs. One of them likes to throw lots of grenades, so the last thing you need is to run into battle and not notice an explosive's just landed next to you, courtesy of your comrade. Continue along, fighting the Nazis as you go. When you reach a large open area with an obelisk, get to your belly and take out your rifle. There are quite a number of hiding Nazis here. There are several behind the obelisk, as well as a couple off to the right and one nasty bugger on the steps of the building straight ahead. Take them all down from a prone position.
Once you are certain they are all dead, run straight for the steps ahead (where you wasted the MP40-toting Nazi). This is the train station. As soon as you near the barricaded door, the mission ends. Well done.
