Of course, you'll need to know the army of Darkness to do battle against them. As such, the profiles below focus on how to outsmart and overpower these daunting opponents. Just to keep things confusing, however, we also recognize that you will often have to command these loathsome creatures as well. In solo player games, you may be able to command many of these units through the Deceiver's alliance-altering Blinding Dream. But most of all, you will need to be as adept with Dark troops as well as Light when you venture onto the multiplayer battlefields. Brigands Essentially, these are Warriors who fight for the other guys. These basic melee troops function in all ways the same as your own beloved front-line troops, but they move more slowly. Hit Brigands with Dwarven explosives and Fire Arrows, or just rush them with your own armored soldiers. Dark Archers Identical to your very own Bowman … but evil! Fire at them with your own projectile troops, but remember to take higher ground and try to outnumber them by at least 3-to-1. Fetches A creature almost too horrifying to contemplate. Dark priestesses employed and then stranded by Balor after his defeat in the Great War, these creatures have the power to summon lightning and direct it toward their enemies, which tend to die in droves when the attack succeeds. There are a few tricks to battling Fetches without becoming the next skin they wear to cover their true visages. The key to Fetches is their attack distance: their lightning attack lacks the long range of the Bowmen's arrows or even the Soulless' spears, but at the same time they cannot be too close or they lose the ability to summon the necessary charge. Also, if you can hit them, you will find the Fetch to be as fragile as a cheap champagne flute; they go down easily. And so you can render Fetches harmless by using these limitations against them. The simplest tactic is to mow down Fetches with Bowmen; three or four arrows do the trick. Often, however, when enemies come in droves, this is easier said than done. If a Fetch manages to get close enough to your troops to attack, spread your forces as far apart as possible. It takes some time for a Fetch to recharge after an attack, so limiting her to one victim at a time increases the probability of an attacker getting within her minimum attack distance. Never charge a Fetch with clumped troops, or you will lose them all with humiliating speed. When equipped with Fetches in multiplayer games, keep them on very high, unapproachable ground and always back them up with a team of melee troops. You will also need to keep them under very tight rein, lest they char your own troops. One great trick with Fetches takes advantage of the conductive property of water. When your enemy is crossing a lake or river, use your Fetches to target the surface of the water (the Control Key by default) and fire. Anyone standing in the water will receive a charge from the Fetch. Just make sure none of your men are splashing around. Next, The Ghasts and the Ghôls |
