Myrdred the Deceiver, one of the Fallen Lords, fought alongside Balor in the Great War but fell out of favor and disappeared during the campaign. He had no great love for his allies and his obstinacy nearly got him killed. His rage over this betrayal will make him a valuable, albeit unstable, ally. The Deceiver is extremely resilient and possesses two effective attacks. His primary weapon is a life-sucking attack that immobilizes a chosen foe and drains its life force gradually. It's best to pair the Deceiver with a melee attacker to finish off any enemies trapped in the spell. Note that while an enemy is as good as dead once caught in the Deceiver's magic grasp, the Deceiver takes a moment to initiate the attack during which his enemy may well injure him. Also remember that the spell requires a small amount of mana, and that the Deceiver will only be able to use it for so long before he must rest. The Deceiver's secondary weapon is a Blinding Dream that turns foes to your side. Casting this mana spell permanently earns the allegiance of most foes, at the cost of all the Deceiver's mana. Giant Myrkridia and any undead units are, sadly, immune. This long-range, powerful weapon can be used in a variety of ways. Target the lead enemy in a group to hold up his companions while you establish your position or even retreat - your new friend will likely perish, but he will serve his purpose. You may also select units at the rear to take care of weaker enemies behind the main assault. If a pack of Mauls is backed up by a Fetch, you can target the Maul closest to the Fetch to take out this dangerous but fragile creature. Alternatively, you could select this same Fetch to fire upon the Mauls from the rear. Finally, you can target lone enemies or the strongest in a group to recruit additional and otherwise unavailable enemies to your side. The only drawback to the Deceiver is his slow mana recharge. It will take considerable time to recuperate from casting a Blinding Dream, so you will either have to be patient before attempting to attack again or simply continue the fight without his ability. (Of course, you can always crank up the game speed in order to quickly restore the Deceiver's powers, but make sure no enemies are around when you do.) Often, using the Deceiver effectively will require you to rest your units while he recharges, establishing defenses against attack until he charges to full power. All missions featuring the Deceiver require his survival for success. If you lose him, you lose the war. |
