2. The Game
2.1 Getting started
First of all you will have to download the Western Quakeł base files, which you can find on the official webpages. The latest version is Beta 2.2. To play online, you will need all files for your operating system located in the "Mod Files" section of the webpages. You will also need the latest Quakeł Arena version (currently 1.32) to be able to start WQ3.
Windows users: After having downloaded all required files, you simply have to launch the installation file which will extract and copy WQ3 to your hard drive. All you have to do is follow the instructions on the screen. When done installing WQ3 you'll be able to launch it using the created shortcut.
MAC/Linux users: After having downloaded the appropriate files, you will have to extract them to your Quake3 folder (e.g. "/usr/local/games/quake3/", for Linux Systems). The archive also contains a shortcut to launch WQ3.
It is important to use a shortcut to start wq3 because of the special com_hunkmegs setting that is necessary. So if you have no shortcut create by using "quake3.exe" and adding this to the target-line: "+set fs_game westernq3".
The main menu is pretty similar to the Base Quake 3 menu, except that you access the submenus by clicking on the corresponding parts on the background picture, and you should have no difficulties in navigating it. Most of the new commands are easy to understand.
2.2 Gamemodes
All gamemodes in WQ3 are based on the same money system, implying purchase of equipment with money from rewards. It means you have to kill other players (the amount of money you get depends on the rank of the player you killed) in order to get money and be able to buy your equipment. In round-based gamemodes buying equipment is only possible near your start location.
All gamemodes, except (Team-)Deathmatch, are round-based. If you die during a round you will only respawn at the beginning of the next round, staying as a spectator during the current round. Rounds last a specific amount of time or until one team has completed their objectives or all members of a team are dead. The team that wins the round gets a point. Of course, the team with most points wins the match!
2.2.1 Standard Round-Teamplay (wq_)
This gametype is the most basic gametype in Western Quakeł. The two teams have the same goal: killing all players of the opposing team! There is no other way to win a round.
2.2.2 Bank Robbery (br_)
As the name says, the goal of this mission types is to rob a bank and bring the money back to a secure point. To do so each player of the attacking team is equipped with two sticks of dynamite in order to blow up the safe. Robbing the bank isn't going to be easy because the whole second team is defending the bank and will try to prevent the other team from getting in. While a robbery might prove to be more difficult, it will also be much more profitable than just killing off the defending team.
Once the attacking team wins a round the roles are switched, meaning the team that defended the bank before will have to rob it.
2.2.3 Duel Mode (du_)
The idea of duel is to enable classical western shoot-outs using only pistols. Therefore you will only be able to buy Pistols in the mode. (see 3.1 "Buy-Menu"). The duel maps are huge maps divided into several parts (as seen in the pics section). Separate Duels can be performed in each part of the map (up to 16 players are supported per map). The details of the duel are as follows: The combatants stand opposite each other while a musical clock starts to play. When the music stops the duel begins. The holstered pistols have to be drawn, it will take a few seconds until one can aim precisely (this will be indicated by the crosshair gradually fading in). During this time the player can decide whether he wants to face his opponent (with poorer chances to hit) or seek cover. The winner of the duel gets money for his kills and usually stays on the map part he has "won" and where he will meet the next challenger(s).
You get a star for every duel you have won. As soon as somebody has got 5 stars the duel round ends and the winner gets one duel point (->duellimit). As the next round starts all players lose their weapons and money. As you can see, it depends on the amount of players on the server on which map and with whom you play (it's seems kinda complicated explaining, but you'll get it real fast).
2.3 Health and Damage
The health and damage system in Western Quakeł differs a lot from regular Q3, as we tried to make this as realistic as possible. There are different damage locations. Each location deals more or less damage, meaning if you get hit in the head you're likely to die at once, but if you get hit in the leg you have best chances to stay alive. Here's a list of the locations going from most damaging to least: head, neck, chest, stomach, groin, shoulder, legs, arms, hands, feet. If you are searching for a way to recover your health, you won't find anything. That's because there is no possibility to restore your health in Western Quakeł. Once you got hit, you'll keep the same health until the end of a round.
2.4 The Heads-Up Display (HUD)
1. Your weapon.
2. Ammunition loaded in your weapon.
3. Ammunition left in the belt.
4. Items you are carrying (boiler plate, ammunition belt, money bag).
5. Your money. Earned by killing enemies, or by winning bank robbery rounds.
6. Your health.
7. Same as item 3, they both show the same number (akimbo only).
8. Ammunition loaded in the second weapon you are holding (akimbo only).
9. The second weapon you are holding (akimbo only).
10. Crosshair - turns yellow when you can press the 'activate' key to open a door or use a gatling, and a red X means you're aiming at a teammate.
11. This arrow points in the direction of the escape point (only when carrying the money bag in bank robbery mode).
12. Your score to the left, best (or second best if your are in the lead) score to the right. Team scores in team gametypes.
