U.S. Campaign: Chateau
Training | Pathfinder | Burning Village | Burned Village - Dawn | Car Ride | Brecourt Manor | Chateau | POW Camp |
It's time to play Americans at the Gates. Just up the road is a chateau, where some important men are being held captive. You've got a lot to do this time around and the fiercest firefight to date. When you are in the chateau you will need to use cover or you will die. Remember the lean. Remember it well.
Objective 1: Break through the main gate
First up, you need to get to the Chateau. That's no
easy task. Head up the road and bear right. You'll head gunfire from an MG42 up
ahead. There's a big rock you can hide behind. Lean out and attempt to snipe the
gunner. You may get hit here, but once his attention is on you, get back against
the rock and wait for the gunfire to stop. If it doesn't, toss a grenade
blindly, then lean and shoot during the explosion.
Follow your men to the guardhouse. Get against the booth on the left and you can lean and lob a grenade their way. This is just the preliminary gate, so don't get too happy, soldier. Continue on up the drive, sticking to the left. As you reach the gates, a truck pulls up unloading Nazis. As the truck arrives, toss another grenade. If you get it near the truck you can take out at least two Nazis right off the bat. The Germans will come at the gate, they won't all stay covered, so be prepared for a pressing attack. You can counter this with some foolish bravery, by heading through the gate, going left behind the truck, and trying to come up behind any advancing Nazis.
Objective 2: Find a way into the chateau
Now that you're inside the gates, you need to find a
way inside the lovely chateau. Head left and follow the path. A couple of Nazis
will give you troubles on the way. When you reach the garage, it really gets
heavy. Look out for the Germans on the balcony tossing grenades. Return the
favor then take on the two truckloads of Nazis while under cover. Continue on
the path and take down the final bit of resistance. It's just you and Lt. Irwin
inside the chateau, so get ready to bail him out early and often.
Objective 3: Secure any documents and plans
Lt. Irwin is a good kid, but not very helpful, so don't
rely on his support. It's crucial that you play the peek-a-boo game around every
corner. Get to a wall, lean out, fire if you see an enemy. It's simple. Make
your way upstairs and you will eventually hit the master bedroom, where you'll
find some documents on the table. Grab 'em. If you can't find this room, there's
something wrong with you, as there are no branching paths along your way.
Objective 4: Find the secret communications room
Run back down the stairs (don't worry there's no more
resistance on the second floor). Once downstairs, follow the Objective Meter.
See that closed double door. Well, it doesn't stay closed for long as a Nazi
kicks it open and starts firing. Drop him, then drop to the ground and pull out
your rifle. There are a couple of Nazis on the balcony to the right. You can see
their heads if you lean left from the doorjam. Snipe them. Enter the room to
entice another Nazi to show up on the balcony. Take him down (with luck he'll
fall to the ground. Hoorah!) Continue on to the room with the armor.
The grand room beyond is a lot trickier. It seems quiet, but as soon as you enter, Nazis flood the room. As soon as you hear the door kick open, back your truck up and get behind the door jam. You can lean out and pick off most of the Nazis. When you can't see anymore, move to the other side of the door and peak. When all seems clear, step into the room. Even if all the Nazis are dead, another will bust through as you head up the stairs, so be prepared to pop him. You can grab an MP44 from one of the Nazis on the balcony, but it has very little ammo.
Move down the hall but don't step outside. A truckload of Nazis shows up. Toss a grenade their way and then try to pick them off while staying inside the hallway. Any that get by will come up through the chateau and try and catch you from behind. Go back into the previous room and greet them.
Outside, on the balcony, are several Nazis, eager to see your smiling face. Lean and shoot. When they are down, head the length of the balcony with your gun poised to fire at the door. When you reach, several Nazis appear. But hey, you're ready for them. In the hallway, take a right and you can enter another bedroom with some health, then head the other way down the hall.
Always be ready for Nazis popping out of doorways. Move downstairs and fight the Nazis in the next room. Looks like a dead end. Oh wait, they have the Maltese Falcon. Cool. What might happen if you flip the bird? An interesting question. Try it and get ready to move through a clever German secret door in the fireplace. There's no one in this room except you and Lt. Irwin (if he's survived).
Objective 5: Sabotage enemy communications equipment
Oh look, shiny equipment! What would happen if you shot
it all? Try it and see for yourself. As soon as you destroy the equipment, spin
around and waste the Nazis inside the supply closet. Hmm... what exactly did you
just interrupt? Head back out the fireplace and get your kudos from your
commander. It's time to finish this mission with a grand rescue.
Objective 6: Find and secure the prisoners
You now have some real backup assisting you, so you
don't need to be gungho. Follow your fellow patriots down the stairs. Use the
barrels in the cellar for cover and take out the Nazis. You'll eventually reach
the cell door. Captain Foley plants some explosives. You need to get your butt
back behind the door unless you wanna die. Ready a grenade and as soon as the
door blows, toss it. There's a gunner prone with an MG42 willing to slice anyone
who enters through the door. If the grenade misses him, aim low, run into the
open, and blast him. You'll find one of the prisoners, Captain Price, in the
cell to the right. Though Foley tries to help him up, Price has too much pride
and refuses any assistance. He takes a gun and now it's time to get the hell
outta Dodge.
