A Dolphin is an aquatic mammal that resembles a large fish. It is highly intelligent and usually acts friendly toward humans and humanoid creatures. Because it is a mammal, a dolphin must surface periodically to breathe air, though it can hold its breath for up to an hour of light activity (or two turns of strenuous action). A dolphin is frequently found in the company of mermaids.

Friendly, playful marine mammals, dolphins and porpoises are highly intelligent, some say easily on the low end of the human spectrum. Most dolphins can learn to comprehend human, humanoid or demihuman languages. In the wild, the chances of encountering one who does is small. Species of dolphins and porpoises can be found in almost any body of salt water. The major differences between dolphins and porpoises is that dolphins generally have dorsal fins with a greater curve and a larger nose and mouth. Both species, on average, grow from 5 to 8 feet in length.

Dolphins are symbols of wisdom and playfulness among the sea folk of many worlds. Found in oceans and in the Elemental Plane of Water, dolphins are befriended by druids and rangers, and many tales speak of dolphins that appeared out of nowhere to protect swimmers from sharks and other aquatic predators.

Dolphins are clever, social marine mammals that feed on small fish and squid. An adult specimen is between 5 and 6 feet long.
