An embodiment of the element of Earth that glides through stone
A Xorn is an embodiment of the element of Earth. Xorns are about 5 feet tall and wide and weigh about 600 pounds. It speaks Common along with its own elemental language. Because a xorn's symmetrically-placed eyes allow it to look in any direction, it cannot be flanked. A xorn does not attack fleshy beings except to defend itself or its property since it cannot digest meat. A xorn is indifferent to non-elemental creatures, with the sole exception of anyone carrying a significant amount of precious metals or minerals, which a xorn eats. A xorn can smell food up to 20 feet away and can be quite aggressive when seeking food. A xorn's favorite mode of attack is to wait just beneath a stone surface until a foe comes within reach, then emerge suddenly. Groups of xorns often send one of their number to the surface to negotiate for food while the remainder position themselves for a surprise attack.
The xorn is a strange creature of elemental origin whose unlikely body can bring to mind a plant: six root-legs and a central trunk with three eyes, topped by a mighty maw. It famously feeds off gems, crystals, and precious stones, and can move through earth almost as smoothly as a fish through water.
Using its extraordinary sense of smell, the xorn can spot the crystals and gemstones it has a big appetite for. Even if the stones have been extracted or set in items, it can still sniff them out. A xorn who has not eaten in a long time can behave aggressively, bringing its many limbs to bear against anything wanting to deprive it of its meal.
Though a xorn digests crystallized mineral matter, its waste can be of great value to miners, as this elemental excretes chemically pure lumps: gold, silver, copper, mithral, sulfur, arsenic…
All the components mixed in minerals are sorted and compacted during their transit through the xorn's digestive tract. A true living ingot-casting machine! Such an anatomical peculiarity is a boon for miners, since it requires no fuel or chemicals. Provided one is willing to give up gemstones of any kind, one can get a lot out of a xorn. Thus, certain communities enslave xorns to exploit them. One must be careful, however, as the elemental can react violently when it panics or feels in danger.
Bizarre creatures native to the Elemental Plane of Earth, xorn sniff out gemstones and precious metals, then tunnel through earth and rock to consume those treasures. On the Material Plane, xorn must range far and wide through the Underdark to sustain themselves, becoming aggressive toward miners and treasure hunters when the valuable minerals of their diet are scarce.
A xorn's unnatural origins are suggested by its unusually heavy body and the large, powerful mouth sitting atop its head. Its three long arms are each tipped with sharp talons, and its three large, stone-lidded eyes see in all directions.
Elemental Travelers
Possessed of the power of elemental earth, a xorn glides through stone and dirt as easily as a fish swims through water. It doesn't displace earth or stone when it moves, but merges with and flows through it, leaving no tunnel, hole, or hint of its passage.
Keep a few gems in your pocket. A hungry xorn is a helpful xorn.
Xorn
Treasure-Devouring Glutton
On the Elemental Plane of Earth, xorn roam in search of meals they consider delicacies: gems, crystals, and veins of precious metals. For xorn, the Elemental Plane of Earth presents an endless buffet. Those that find their way to the Material Plane discover that most worlds are culinary wastelands. These xorn scour subterranean depths, consuming whatever sparse gems and ores they find. This might bring them into conflict with miners or others who hide their treasures underground.
Xorn have three eyes, three arms, and three legs arranged around their trilaterally symmetrical frames. At the top of their bodies is a toothy maw that's equally capable of crushing minerals and dangerous creatures. Xorn move through the earth magically, leaving no tunnel or sign of their passage.
Rapt gourmands, xorn focus on their next meals. They care little for living creatures and avoid harming them when possible. They know others also covet the earth's treasures, and they're not above bargaining for their meals. Xorn might share their knowledge of the Underdark in exchange for snacks of gems, coins, or magical metals. If starving or angered, xorn might try to forcibly take their meals.
Roll on or choose a result from the Xorn Delicacies table to inspire a xorn's favorite fare.
An embodiment of the element of Earth that glides through stone
Xorn are bizarre creatures from the elemental planes of earth that eat precious metals and other minerals. They have a rock-like consistency, granting an extremely good armour class, and appear to be made of stone. Xorn have a barrel-shaped body, radially symmetrical with three eyes, three arms, three stubby legs, and a powerful mouth set in the top of the creature's body. The stone-like appearance grants the xorn a tremendously good chance of surprising its enemies.
